Cruise Control teaching A/T bad habits?

I see quite a few posts about hunting auto transmissions that mention using cruise control. Given the relatively narrow powerband of this engine, it makes sense that there is going to be a lot of shift activity in a blindfolded effort by the CC to maintain set speed. I say blindfolded because the cruise has no idea when a hill is coming, how steep, how long, etc. I don't use it much in the Denver area, for this reason. With a light foot and a little planning you can minimize shifts significantly. Getting a run at hills, giving up a few MPH on the smaller ones. If the truck is not hell-bent on maintaining a set speed, things settle down measurably. I am wondering if the CC is teaching the transmission bad habits during the learning phase, or if this data is dismissed when the cruise is activated. If it is the former, avoiding the use of it early on might give the vehicle a better shifting disposition. Is it BS that owners should have to deal with this? Yes, absolutely. But the power is where it is for the sake of MPG, nothing much to do about it. Just looking for a way to work with it, this seems to be working for me so far as things are pretty calm. Only at 2,000 miles, perhaps it is still early.

Never thought of that but you may be on to something. The cruise control algorithm is 99% of my problem with this truck.

I feel like after having the TSB performed my cruise does what it is supposed to do. Yes it will downshift when climbing a hill to maintain the set cruise speed but upshift properly once the hill is crested.

It is still early. I'm in Denver too and I was up in the mountains every weekend this summer. The trucks performance on climbs was very disappointing. I'm at 10,000 miles now and last few trips up the mountains it shifted great, although I haven't been heading up much due to lack of snow. Held 4th at 70+ on the way up I70 west of Denver. Sometimes it'll revert back to its old ways but it's improved significantly. Before it improved, however, I thought cruise eliminated the hunting on climbs.

It's very bad on the 2.7 4cyl. I never use it, because it down shifts like mad over small inclines. The 2.7 is an awesome reliable proven motor, but man it has no balls whatsoever. My transmission/cc hunts in heavy wind too! Embarrassing lol.

I don't ever use the cruise in mine. After my last reset I haven't used it once. Mine still shifts all over. But...it mostly just stays in 4th and I'm cruising around 3500 on the freeway.

Try cruise control with S6 then bump it to S5 before the hill, climbs just fine and depending on slope holds the gear just fine. It's how you tell the cruise a hill is coming up.

Mine with cruise on will shift to 5th on small incline and 4th on steep incline then upshift back to 6th after cresting hill. I think some don't like it downshifting 2 gears to 4th to make it up a sleep incline but if you think about it the 2nd gen had 5 speed automatic and it with the bigger motor would downshift to 4th to make it up a steep incline so both trucks liked 4th gear for steep inclines.

I had the first one done. Didn't really do anything. I might get the other one done with my 5k service if it's available.

If I reset my battery the getting stuck in forth goes away for a couple weeks. But then comes back. I really think once I regear that'll fix it.

Cruise control was bad in my 2nd Gen and is still bad in my 3rd Gen, so i'm never using it...

It always shift up and down for no reason, it was doing the same thing in my 2nd gen, i don't think that is a transmission problems.

Sounds like what I have been wondering since my last fill up. I have a 2017 with just over 4000 miles and every tank prior to this last one, I'd fill up at around 16.5 mpg. Last fill up, not changing my driving habits at all, I had 15.4. I always find my CC on at about 77-78 mph, it likes to stay high at around 3500. When I catch it, I tap the throttle and it settles to 2000 for about 5 seconds before revving back up to 3500..
