What should I expect to pay to have this repaired?

I was driving down a busy highway in morning traffic a few months ago and this cement truck kicked up a piece of debris off the road. It put a big gash in the front passenger side of the hood and damaged the headlight. I fixed the headlight, but I want the hood repaired.

My mechanic recommended I go to his guy for body repairs and the estimate they gave me was $800.00. That doesn't sound reasonable, but what do I know?

So let me hear your thoughts.

Either a used 2012-2015 hood, or possibly an insurance claim?

A couple of rear window decals...
A junk yard hood would probably be your cheapest bet.

Cheapest would be to pound out the dent as best you can, sand, and paint, then add a hood bug deflector to cover it.

Used hood. Don't bother with repairing it.

Would be cheaper to buy a used replacement than do that.

    Why even pay for insurance?

File a claim as Objects that Hit You are normally covered under comprehensive coverage and will not result in a rate increase. Probably too late to get the headlight covered.

Very reasonable repair cost. You need a new hood if you want a 100% fix.

I agree with going to a junk yard. I wouldn't attempt to fix it yourself. Whoever recommended that has likely never done paint correction on black cars, the wods worst color for repairs.

For some the repair doesn't exceed the deductible. And in some states (like mine) you have to pay your deductible for these instances.

Cause deductible may negate this. I know some people that have $1,000 deductible since cost of insurance is outrageous these days and keeps going up.

Well he didn't say how much his deductible was. So ... I know my Comprehensive Deductible is only 250. You never know until you try.

Replace that hood and headlight and it will be over a grand.

I pay $92 a month for $0 deductible, full coverage through State Farm, and that's including a separate policy on an engagement ring, approx. 1/5 the brand new value of my truck.

    Thats ridiculous.

I pay $60 per month and am livid about that. I'd pay close to $90 to drop both my $1,000 deductibles to zero but then I'd be spending more on monthly premiums then I would just paying the jacked up deductible the few times I'd use it.

    $90/mo is insane.

Insurance is pretty much usless today unless you total a brand new vehicle or get cancer. We all get hosed.

Cheap compared to what I used to pay, and it goes down every year.
