After replacing my cabin air filter, I haven't been able to reinstall the shock and keep it attached. Now when I open the dash door compartment, it slams open when it should slowly lower.

Would there be a secret you have to keep this shock attached and has anyone else experienced this too?

Yeah, when I saw it off I just reinstalled, but after opening it a few times it doesn't stay on. My first multi point inspection at the dealership was the first time the shock was taken off and from that point on, I haven't been able to keep it on, so for the last 8 years it's been in the bottom of my compartment, just thought maybe it's something stupid I'm not doing. I have gotten used to it slamming down, but kind of bugs me I can't get it lowering slowly like it used to when I first bought my Tacoma and was designed to do.

Yeah, I have tried it multi times and ways, but for some reason, I can't get it to stay. I will try one more time, after reading your post but almost 100% sure it will return to the slamming door.

hmmm...how hard was it to disconnect? if you had to force it, you might have damaged the connector part on the glovebox. if that's the case, junkyard might be your best option to find a replacement box/dampener.

Yeah, when the dealership did the multi point inspection 8 years ago they damaged it, now that I think about it. I thought it was something I wasn't doing and now it makes sense that it was sitting in the bottom of my compartment after the dealership did the inspection and not reinstalled, if I knew about this after my inspection, I would have informed the dealership that they damaged it.

Funny you should say going to a salvage yard to find a replacement, because I was just talking to my neighbor about a local yard, as a way to save a lot of money and to always go that route before buying a new part.

What bothers me the most about this is that I didn't ask for the multi point inspection and that they knowingly gave it back to me like that and not fixing the part they damaged. I don't use the door a lot and by the time I found out it was a few months later, never dawning on me till just now.

It not a huge thing and can live with the slamming door, but just kind of bugs me these dealerships work on these vehicles all day long and are paid well to do it too.

Make sure you use the inner notch on the dampener

If it keeps coming off the split peg(s), a small screw threaded into the split straight into the end of the peg will keep it in place. I can't recall the exact size I used, but I want to say a #4 or #6 x 1/2".

The upper one can be done with the glovebox flopped open like you do to access the filter. The lower one is easy with the glovebox in it's normal open position. You simply have to remove the screw to replace your cab filter, not hard to do.

It wasn't my original idea either, Someone here or on ToyotaNation posted it years ago, and I copied. Worked great for me.

Mine came off after a couple filter changes and now lives in the glove box. It's not worth the effort to me try to rig it to make it work.

Ha, yup, mine floated around in the glovebox for a while, almost threw it out before I knew the solution.
