Well, damn. I'm tempted to sell or trade this thing in just to get rid of the problem. What's the ETA on Toyota sending out these letters?

I'm guessing we still don't get compensated unless they find a giant hole in the frame.

Not really interested in a frame replacement after hearing the horror stories of rattling/clunking trucks afterward. If I wanted a clunker, I'd have bought a Chevy.

 

Your post just expressed the thoughts going through my mind recently, but I have had this Tacoma since new and also know how well I have taken care of it.

My biggest worry about keeping this Tacoma, is that I get a perforation after the 12 year inspection is over and stuck with an undrivable truck. Someone posted pictures of his failed frame, with a perforation next to the catalytic converter and rust streaks running down. My truck has the same streaking rust running down in the same spot, so my only question is: will my frame have a perforation in the same spot before the 12 year inspection is complete??

I just sprayed my frame this weekend and realized I'm fighting a losing battle. Fluid film helps alot but it just makes the frame die a slow death. I'm done with it. The fluid film people have made too much money from our tacoma's. I plan on trading in my '05 sometime next year before the 12 year warranty runs out. And I'm done with toyota, I just don't see the quality I've heard so much about. One and done for me.

 

I have been thinking that way, but know how well mine has been taken care of, because I have been the only owner. Toyota should compensate owners who have had to buy and apply an undercoating after Toyota didn't do it when they manufactured it, well enough to stop it failing prematurely.

 

It's just a poorly designed frame with too many places to trap salt. And toyota needs to accept responsiblity for this. A 12 year warranty is pathetic.
Who would buy a new truck from toyota if the frame was only expected to last 12 years????

 

This is something I totally disagree with Toyota about, because the first generation has a 15 year warranty. My neighbor owns a 2004 Tacoma and his is warrantied till 2019, while mine is warrantied till 2018, if the court approves this $3 billion class action lawsuit. Toyota had to be brought to do the right thing kicking and screaming through this lawsuit and IMHO should have done it this voluntarily.

 

It's going to take quite a bit of time before any frames are replaced - if they're replaced at all.

I waited about 18 months to get my new rear springs after receiving that notice.

I'll keep my '09 until 1 year is left on the frame warranty, then I'm trading the thing in for something else.

 

I got my frame swapped and forgot about this long ago, there's been tons of threads on this topic in here. What am I missing?

 

2nd Gen frame lawsuit. Looks like frames for these trucks may need to be replaced like the 2nd Gen:

The lawsuit was ongoing for a few years, it just got settled.
In the meantime Toyota had a voluntary campaign to replace frames on 2nd Gen trucks that were in cold weather states that were prone to more snow/ice and salt. They probably knew they were going to loose, so they started early. I had the frame replaced in my 2006 2nd Gen back in 2015, it took 9 months, and they did a shitty job. Tried to charge me for things that wouldn't work (airbag, and some other issues that weren't there) I told them to get f!@##ed, and miraculously they were repaired. But I traded the truck in a month later to a 3rd Gen.

Basically the lawsuit requires all frames to be replaced, not just the cold weather ones.

 

Be careful on here saying things like this. The fanbois will tell you that Toyota has gone above and beyond to make things right and none of the other truck manufacturers would go out and replace frames. This lawsuit should open people's eyes to how poorly these trucks are made. A ten year life on a frame? Get real. These trucks are not built well anymore. I made a mistake in buying one, I am a big enough man to admit it. I was buying on the name Toyota and my previous experience with 80's Toyotas instead of doing actual research. Shame on me.

 

If I was one of the people that had their frame replaced, I may feel different. I have 2 neighbor and each of them own Tacomas, with each of them having a new frame.

 

My 2008 Canadian salty frame is still mint.

I wish I knew about Fluid Film and the Kelley spray kit for FF, when I first purchased my Tacoma, because I know my frame would still be mint too.

 

The same factory also builds frames for the big 3 trucks. DANA

 

Heated garage = No rust, just saying....
