A lot of people buy trucks in order to a multitude of things, not just tow 'full time'. When I towed a lot (and heavy loads)- I did own a 3/4 ton diesel. Now I don't haul heavy loads all the time, but I have a 18' fishing boat and the wifey may want a small R/V.

The Tacoma seemed to fit the bill (at least on paper). My observation from a real world experience towing with my Tacoma leads me to believe it is not nearly as capable as it is 'on paper'. I also know, again from real world experience, the stated mpg is bullshit as well.

This.. my old truck.. The Big Red Sled as my kids called it, not only towed pretty much whatever I wanted, it basically got the same avg mpg as my 'little Taco that Could'.

    dodge2_87d26a031d65377e6cfb17d3979d1ddf48359856.jpg

I am kicking myself for selling it. But hey I figured- "I don't need it anymore- I'll get a bulletproof Taco with better fuel economy and a tow rating enough for what I want".

F*ck me. The hippie that bought my truck and camper burned the son of bitch to the ground somewhere in the desert in September. RIP Big Red Sled....

DITTO. I have one kid on college and another going in a couple years. I'll be dragging U-Haul's back and forth from colleges for the foreseeable future. No need for a 3/4 ton, but need to drive six hours with a trailer and not want to commit hara-kiri at the end of the trip.

That full size was built to tow. Comparable 2017 would cost 50k.

That's just how it works. Expecting full size performance from a mid size truck is just unrealistic. Expecting good mpg while towing is also unrealistic.

I think the canyon/colorado, with diesel, is a nice truck, but for most the diesel engines cost at purchase and over the lifetime of the truck is prohibitive. For the difference in mpg while towing, maybe 2 mpg, and under normal driving conditions it's not worth it.

Just for the record- I do like the Tacoma, I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't. It's just underwhelming. Just ain't got that "Oh what a feeling' in me. I'm going to keep on getting on with the Tacoma... 14,000 miles in 5 months and I'm going to use it as intended, let it fall where it falls. If Toyota offers a DCLB with a manual, I'm on it.

I don't think anyone in this thread ever expected good mpg while towing. Just 'good towing' within stated specs. My experience, err.... not so a good a....

And actually the Canyon / Colorado diesels, OTD are about the same as a TRDOR model. The one I had over the weekend was at $40,000, and there is still room if I want to buy it. I'll bet I could get it for $38,000.

Depending on the power plant, maintenance is not bad. My 24v Cummins had 250,000 on the ODO and was still on the same injectors. The only thing I did was change oil every 10,000 miles, and fuel filter and water separator every year. A typical NAPA hydraulic can.

In fact- that was the most trouble free motor and transmission I have ever owned in my life.

Where are you that you can't get a DBCB manual. I've been eyeing an OR and Sport in that config for awhile now.

On TFL Trucks, they have a video where they tow a 5500 pound trailer with the 16 OR auto tans up the IKE Gauntlet in Colorado. They didn't have any issues and commented on how well it did.

I saw that too. I had less behind me going over MacDonald pass just outside of town and I was full on the pedal to the floor and "losing altitude Captain!". Puppy was screaming the whole way...

I don't know.. It's like some guys are getting Taco's with no issues, great mpg's and some just plainly are not. It's like a tale of two trucks. Seriously- there are two very real and very opposing arguments with this truck.

    It's baffling.

I drooled over that truck. I was 19 at the time.

My insurance guy was like "Uh yeah, we'll insure it... For about $4,000 a year."

About 15 years ago (before my Dodge) I bought a Ford F-250 standard cab long bed with a 460 V8. Holy shit was that a monster! I remember I had a full, piled high load of unseasoned oak in the bed- maybe 5,000 lbs, and I had to merge quickly onto the secondary road due to traffic.

I STILL burned the rear tires, lol.

Too bad it had the death wobble. Sold that thing pretty quickly.

I don't have the tranny flashed with any updates, have no r-d delay, no flare, zero issues. Don't want the update. I have no hood vibration, no differential howl.
Its a solid truck. There might be a few problems out there and it seems like this is the place people come to whine at Tacoma Whiners forum.

I compared the 3rd gen and the GM twins for quite awhile. I do believe aside from the plain looks the diesel GM offering is a much smoother, quieter ride. I ended up going a much different route. I purchased a 15' supercrew f150 XLT 5.0 with 14k on the clock. It's been treating me pretty good in the mpg dept. 19 city and 21-24 hwy depending on the speed. Aside from the hard plastics the truck is quiet and shifts like butter. Couldn't be happier thus far.

My sequoia gets about 5 mpg above Fuelly. I can't explain it but I sure as shit don't mind either.

Nice truck and great mileage for the 5.0. I looked hard at the 2.7 or 3.5 eco-boost, but I really prefer a mid sized truck (had three rangers in the day), and I felt the Canyon Duramax would have better economy, and a lower price point than the f150. It's hard to beat a full sized truck with a v8 for comfort and quality of the ride.
