Just called customer service recall was extended last week and you will need to get inspection done by August 2017. Just thought I would post here because I never heard about the first one. I have read trhreads from people who had horror stories about getting the frame replaced though.

    Wait what? For first gens??

I think there might be some miscommunication somewhere, I know that Toyota recently extended it for 2nd gens but the 1st gen inspection deadline ended a few years ago. Can't see why they would suddenly decide to extend it...but that would be awesome if they did. Got a link?

I have a 2002 4x4 quad cab... They said they extended it and dealer just looked it up to confirm. I'm in Colorado. They are going to inspect it tomorrow. They also said the recall is the same one as before, like same requirements.

Well I'll be damned, if they indeed are offering inspections & warranties again for first gens then that is good news for a lot of folks on here. At least for those with the 2002-2004 models...I assume the '15 years from build date' warranty length still applies so 2001 and older would be out of luck.

I found some rust inside my frame a couple weeks ago and immediately called Toyota to see if there is record of it being inspected and or treated. The special claims people called back and told me mine was covered until 8/3/17. My truck is an 02 and I see no record of it being inspected by previous owners

That was my understanding as well, the truck would've had to have been inspected prior to the inspection deadline...which for 1st gens was a few years ago IIRC. Sounds like what the OP is saying is that the inspection deadline has been reinstated? But if it was then it would only apply to 2002-2004 first gens...

Pretty sure it's always been 15 years from date of sale.

I wonder if it's the same in Canada...further complicated by the fact that my Tacoma is originally from the US.

Anyone able to find a press release to reflect this new info?

It's always been 15 years from the date of sale IF you had your frame inspected and coated by Toyota prior to the deadline, which was a few years ago for first gen Tacomas.

What the OP is saying (it sounds like) is that the inspection/coating is being offered again

I just called Toyota Customer service about my '99 SC 4x4. I confirmed the VIN is covered by the frame recall but it's over 15 years old so they wouldn't do anything for me.

Any other recourse you guys can suggest?

Actually I think '99s fell under the buy-back program, where Toyota would buy back your truck for 1.5(?) times KBB value. But that program also ended several years ago.

Unfortunately there isn't anything Toyota can or will do for you, unless you buy a frame from them which is crazy expensive. Best bet would be to find a frame yourself from a non-running Tacoma or weld patches into your current frame (not always a good idea depending on how bad the rust is).

Call customer service they will take your vin and stuff and someone will call you back but the dealership was just made aware of the extension. Probably because they just got sued for Tundras or something.

Because you have an '02, you're still within the 15 year warranty time frame. It would expire next year.

are we still trying to figure out if this is indeed an extension for the first inspection? my 02 was never inspected, so i'm hoping it is (although it may not be super helpful, i don't have any penetrations). my father-in-laws prerunner on the other hand, has a massive crack, and would for sure benefit from an extension on the initial inspection period.

You are right, I think that is what we need to know; is this an extension to get inspected (CRC applied) in relation to the original 2010 deadline or not. It would be great if it was.
