Camping and Backpacking GEAR thread

Id love to get a down bag but for the northeast they're not viable due to the high humidity here. A down bag would get wetted out real quick. Unfortunately I have to use a synthetic bag and i have had great luck with the north face cats meow.

 

Dri-Down is pretty good though, and most manufacturers use it now or at least offer it as an option.

 

TNF Cat's Meow is a solid choice in synthetics, produced in one form or another since about 1980. My kids have my old ones (from 85) and they're just now reduced to about half their original warmth.

 

I love my Hubba Hubba Nx. Took it for the first time this year to the Eastern Sierra and it served my wife and I quite well. Not a single issue at all. Not the lightest on the market, but it worked great in all conditions for us. She's a cold sleeper, and I'm a tall guy, and we both were very comfortable. Setup is 5 minutes max with just 1 person, and you can't beat the different setup configurations you get with it.

 

I just saw where the tents are on sale after I got the MSR Elixer 3 a month ago. lol

The Elixer has been a great tent. We've used it twice already and love it. Last Saturday the MSR went up faster than the guy next to us with a instant up tent.

Both nights so far have been in the 30's and tent was plenty warm.

I needed the ability to fit 3 if we all went so a 2 person wasn't a choice.

 

Just bought 2 of these last weekend and used them that night. Got down to 32 degrees and we were both plenty warm and it could have gotten a lot colder with them and been fine. Two piece bag system with an outer bag and a liner. 50-60 with just the liner 30-40 with just the outer bag and 5-20 with both. Went to go to their surplus store beside the main store for a couple of military surplus bags but they had closed the surplus store. Went in the main store and they had these for $69. Came with compression stuff sacks and a biggers compression stuff sack to put both bags in. Very happy with my purchase. When we woke up in 32 degrees it was like laying in the bed at home with the covers over you, nice and cozy.

This arrived today. Ordered yesterday from Eastern Mountain Sports with 20% off and $10 in points. Friend recommended it after using one on a self guided Alaskan float trip.

I'll give it a try. I've generally made my own single serve coffee bags as it's about as low tech as you can get.

 

Coffee on the trail or in camp, regardless of how it's made (except instant) is great!

 

I use an Aero press in my camper and moto camping, lighter options for backpacking. The Aero press is so good, a friend of mine has one in his boat, one in his truck, one in his house.

 

This is the method I followed for the single serve bags. Nothing to clean or break. As simple as you can get. Just add hot water.

I think I just suck at using it, but it's kind of a pain in the ass for me. Plus there's cleanup.

 

Ive never liked coffee but it smells so good brewing.

 

I've always loved the aroma of brewing coffee. Didn't drink it for ages. Then magically one random day in my 30s, I started drinking it like had been for years. No explanation.

 

I don't drink "real" coffee very often. My wife says I only drink the"froo-froo" stuff at Starbucks, but the via instant is pretty good and works great on the trail.

 

There are aeropress competitions...the thing has a cult like following.

I use one at home. I refuse to use kcups and I only drink 1 cup a day so I didn't really want a normal coffee maker taking up space. Just heat up water on the stove til bubbles start coming up off the bottom and the water is hot enough. Not as easy as a drip machine but eh I have time.

 

What's the weight total?

 

Just bought a big Agnes fly creek hv ul2 mtglo from rei. Only has one door and vestibule. I figured it should be fine since I only really use 1 door even with my old quarter dome 3. Waiting for it to be delivered. dont really care for the lights much but it was cheaper then the regular fly creek during the rei sale. Hopefully I'll like it.

 

More than a backpacker will want probably. 6.6 lbs for complete system in all 3 compression bags
