Good luck. However, I have a feeling this August 2017 deadline they've given you is the 15 year period after your truck came off the lot; which is only going to help if you had the CRC and inspection done before the original deadline.

Hey so I just talked to the rep. I forgot to let you guys know my truck is registered in California so I dont think I was notified about the rust or the rustproofing recall. And yes she said I had until August 22 2017 to find a 10 mm hole. Its super rusty, like so much rust it is hard to work on but i dont see any 10mm holes. She also said its a visual inspection... Any tips? On another note I just took it in to get brakes changed and the mechanic (not dealer ship but Toyota Cert) said it was like $2000 cause its gonna need complete replacement front and back of all parts from rust. Back brakes are not even working ebrake seized. fuk....

$2000 is about right if you use Toyota parts. I used aftermarket to replace calipers/pads, shoes/cylinders (already had the drums and rotors) and it was about $850 (canadian)

I dunno, I would say you always gotta check vin. Cause some of the states have different rules.

Some states like CA would not have notified you aout anything cause it is not a high risk rust state, UT and Colorado are also not high risk states I think. Mostly east coast.

does not getting notified about the issue mean that you get another chance to find rust though? I'm still trying to figure out whether this is any different than what has already been understood about the frame replacement program. It sounds like you've got more time to find a hole in your frame, even though the time has passed for initial inspection (now most, or all? of us are only covered if the frame was inspected and then coated before the now passed deadline).

i'm wondering if what you're experiencing would work in a state like wisconsin (because it's a toyota-wide change/extension in policy), or just in california (because of some state issue)

My thoughts, and these are my opinions, is that they have now extended the TSB to include other states. Originally it was the "cold weather climate" states only (above Mason-Dixon line) and that campaign ended years ago. Now they are branching out probably from customers in salty/seawater states just like the airbag TSB (corrosion problems) and basically doing a CYA at this point. Most probably will not have issues but they'll get a few hundred that might need replaced.

No need to worry about my frame , truck was purchased new from the dealer and has been in the desert environment the whole time and only 57k miles

if it's being extended for some, why not extend it for all. over the life span of the truck it could have moved several times. are we saying that if i drove my WI truck to CA, that it might be covered out there? i'm not saying i'll do that, but, for arguments sake.

toyota customer service took my vin, but no other information, so i don't know that they would have known that i was anywhere specific (to either be, or not be covered).

OP, would you mind sharing the dealership info via PM?

I believe the original TSB stated trucks "purchased" or "registered" in cold-climate states were eligible. I'd have to find the TSB and re-read it to make sure.

That being said if you were already supposed to be notified then no, there is no further extension to get the truck inspected.

This would strictly be for new cases that have come up in the states not originally listed. The program for those original states already happened, they did what they needed to get the word out and advertise.

Also, there is no evidence or notice other than an article stating Toyota is doing this. Official letters or communication needs to happen.

ditto, one of the best things about living in the southwest. My '04 spent it's whole life in Arizona, currently has 37k miles on it and the frame still looks brand new after 12 years. Never been treated or coated.

    Just a quick question/thought

If you welded sliders (or hell, drilled holes for bolt-ons) onto the frame, would that void any sort of recall/warranty?

I could definitely see at least some dealerships being assholes and saying that, yeah. As long as the rust doesn't start where the sliders are mounted, then it shouldn't matter but I wouldn't be surprised if that was used against you.
