Basically its two t/cases stacked together with one box @ 4.70.1:1 gearing and another box with 2.28:1 gearing . with this setup you're over 500.1:1 low range enabling you to crawl very slowly

Here's an example of an older 80's Toyota with 511.1:1 low range . if you listen closely the truck is at idle yet it's climbing the sluice with relative ease

    https://youtu.be/6LoQTme51tA

Or you could stack two 5spd transmissions with a dual t/case and be like Marlin . 1rst gear in low range is 1720.1:1 gearing

What's the advantage of SAS over IFS? I want to do this conversion one day, but the most involved thing I've done on my truck is either the water pump, or struts and a brake job. Might take a couple automotive classes so I don't mess anything up, haha. I can probably do IFS if it doesn't require any fabrication or welding.

SAS is far more intricate and has a plethora of advantages over IFS when it comes to off roading like more articulation. This requires much more fabrication considering tacomas don't come with a solid axle in the front. IFS is meant to bolt up to the existing components if you have a prerunner making a much easier job. IFS also gives the ability to tackle most off road scenarios and is ok on city and highway driving unlike a solid axle.

I wouldn't necessarily do off-roading as a hobby, but more for utility (like towing, camping, boat launching, driving in snow, etc.). Is SAS really necessary? You say IFS is okay on city & highway driving, and that's mostly what I do since my tacoma is my daily driver. How would an IFS conversion handle vs. the stock 2x4 on normal roads?

SAS requires a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of fabrication/labor. IFS is completely cabaple for what you're doing and is completely capable for 99.9% of the people on this forum that off-road. SAS is more for rock crawlers or dedicated trail rigs.

Do actual stock 4x4's come with IFS or SAS?

    Ah. Gotcha.

Now is this conversion something that requires a lift, or can I do it at home with jack stands? (lol)

...it's not a conversion. You already have IFS.

No no no, the 4x4 conversion. Like swapping the tranny, transfer case, etc.

I've never done it or anything like swapping a tranny or anything like that. I assume putting the truck on a lift is safer than a few jack stands. But if I recall right, there's a couple members that have done the 4WD conversion to their prerunner at home.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend it to someone that doesn't have experience like this before. Or if you do try to attempt it, make sure you have someone with you that knows how to do it.

F&R suspension, OBA, Custom bed rack, RTT, rear frame plates, 4x4 conversion from prerunner, many other
More and more prerunner owners are doing this. If you are comfortable turning a wrench and following service manual instructions, you can do this in your garage.

Research the hell out of the topic. There's more to it then simply swapping the major components. It's going to be the little things, unique to your build, which are going to cause headaches.

Having done it, would I do it again? Certainly, by far the most rewarding mod I accomplished.

Hey! Same year/model taco as me.
What would you say was the hardest part of the conversion?

Did you have any prior automotive experience?
