Yes its a Garand. And it is an original USGI M1. It really depends on the year of manufacture as to how valuable they are. The real early ones (pre-WWII) can be unbelievably expensive ($10,000 and up). Same with unissued ones. The US Government awarded four companies (Springfield Armory, Winchester. Harrington and Richardson and International Harvester) contracts to produce M1's for the armed forces from the mid 30's to the mid 50's. The former two companies produced M1's during WWII and all four turned out rifles during the Korean War.
Each company, due to their individual manufacturing abilities produced different amounts of M1's. Springfield Armory produced the most -- several million, Winchester came in second, H&R third and International Harvester pulled up the rear. Thus, Springfields are easier to find (and cheaper) than say an IHC.
There were different styles of M1's as well. The real early M1's had a unique gas cylinder, called a "gas trap". These are very hard to find and command a premium for collectors. There were also different sights. Ones with "lockbar" sights, are also relatively rare and thus expensive.
I guess i should stop the lecture. I could go on for days and bore everyone to death with arcane facts and figures.:p

Anyway, mine's an all-correct (all if the individual parts are the original ones) International Harvester, manufactured in 1953.

Tell your dad about the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program), which is a Government Run outfit that sells Government surplus rifles (older ones such as the Garand, M1 Carbine, etc.) for very affordable prices. They have been selling off gov surp for decades now and are starting to finally dry up so he should hurry. http://www.odcmp.com/

I come up to rock hill to party with friends who went to Winthrop, it can be pretty fun up there. My dad makes muzzle loaders, so he starts hunting when muzzle loader season starts, which i think is a few weeks earlier than regular deer season. So you're looking for a.40 or .45 huh? Both great rounds. i personally like the .40 because it has great stopping power and because of the size of the round the mags can carry alot more than a .45, 13 to 15 rounds as opposed to most .45's which are 8. .40 is y round of choice but thats just me. What manufacturer are you thinking about?

well, im not really crazy about glock(which my dad has 3 or 4 different glocks), but i like taurus, and i also like kimber(way expensive,i know) and of course, i like ruger also!! so,what do you mean your dad "makes muzzleloaders", cause if we are on the same page......im kinda looking for a good inline with a good weatherproof primer. i still like pouring powder, but as damp as it gets during muzzleloader season here, inline would be the best for me for early morning hunting!!! oh, forgot to mention, one of my buddies has 2 .45 long colts.........now thats SWEET dude!!! id have one of those anyday......i mean 2 foot flames when its getting dark, friggin awesome!!

let me know when your gonna be in rock hill next time.... we'll get up for some beers!!

I originally didn't care for Glocks too much. I had a Beretta and a S&W .357 a few years ago. I sold the Beretta for the Glock and have never been happier with a gun. It's not a pretty gun but Glocks are amazing. I really don't like Taurus, my dad has a few and they are nothing but problems, he has a .38 revolver that actually skips rounds. If you don't like Glocks though, i think you should save up and go for the Kimber, i like those alot. As far as muzzleloaders, i'm not really too familiar with them and your questions are kinda wasted on me. I don't think what he makes is what you're looking for though, he makes replicas from the civil war era. He does all the engraving, and carving and staining and all that himself. They go for about $3000 a piece. But thats nothing compared to the guy that actually taught my dad how to make them, his go for as high as 15 to 20k each. I'm sure if you've lived in this area for a while you know that they filmed most of "Last of the Mohicans" in this region. The guy that taught my dad was actually asked to make a gun for "Hawkeye". He did and sold it to them for a pretty penny, but i'm not sure if they used it, i think they were looking at two others for that character and i have no idea which one they went with. But anyway, you sound like you want something modern and thats the exact opposite of what my dad makes. My dad also has a .45 Long Colt. for a while he got into "action shooting". i think it's a midlife crisis thing, but a bunch of guys get authentic cowboy stuff and then do quick draw stuff. It's a cool gun, i think it's suppose to be a replica of a gun someone famous use to use, but i can't remember who. There's no real purpose for it except it being fun to shoot and looking cool. Alot of my friends have moved from Rock Hill (or "the Thrill" as we call it) but i'll give you some heads up next time im up that way.

the muzzleloaders your dad makes have got to be kickass man!! im probably going to buy a cva optima elite inline before this season gets here! and i may end up saving up for a kimber, but i can get a taurus or a rock island for alot cheaper, so i may go that route.....not quite sure yet( still getting stuff for my truck, tends to be expensive enough:D). ive shot my buddys .45 long colt a few times, and its definitely not a gun someone would wont to be in line with, if they broke into your house.....itll leave a big hole. im comig to g-ville in the next few weeks to see my dad, and do some yard work for him, but yeah, give me a heads up next time you head this way!!

Alot of people dont like kimbers because of the external extractor. I think they may have changed the configuration on the new 1911's. If i were in the market for a 1911, id look at Springfield Armory's models. Im a big gun board guy and everyone who owns one seems to love them.

Im not a big handgun guy, but i did own a HK USPF .45 ACP. biggest waste of money ever. Overrated bigtime.
