I thought this thread was going to be about mods too. I live in SoCal, but I haven't had ANY of these issues on my TRDOR truck. I only recently changed out the original Bilsteins at 157,000 miles! My truck takes a licking, and keeps on ticking. I had a '87 4Runner that gave up around 330K and I owned '92 and an '02 4Runners too. This is my third Tacoma, and these were ALL tough and excellent trucks. I don't understand people with newer trucks having so many problems. Did QC go downhill after my latest truck was built, or do you thrash yours? Do you keep up on all maintenance and service intervals as I do? I wonder?

I am a huge believer in preventive mainenance, ask anybody who has owned a vehicle before me... I do my mainenance to the "t" and I never abuse my vehicles other than some light off road camping and kayak locations... I'm going to keep the truck, but it's getting frustrating :/

Sorry to hear this. I just don't recall EVER having issues with any Toyota product. As a family, We have owned almost twenty of their products from RAV4s, Sequoia, Scion xB, Tundras, Tacomas, and very few issues.

My truck is one year older and has around the same mileage and has not had one of these problems. As a matter of fact, I have never needed one repair.

My DD is a bone stock 93 Civic with 275,000 miles. Fucking love that car, and it has none of the problems your truck has...In fact in has no problems.

I used to use 89. Then I got laid off and decided 87 is fine. It works with no issue.

I've had plenty of yotas/Lexus products too, and no problems whatsoever! This one is the trouble child! Sadly ... hopefully I'll get all the crap fixed and itll be smooth sailing!

Until someone can show me some solid research on this whole 87/93 deal... it's going to get premium to cover myself!

Yeah, I used to believe a higher octane was better, till I read my owners manual and that changed my mind.

I can support the 4runner. If you don't really need a truck bed a 4runner is another great option! But what others have mentioned above are great points to consider as well..

My 2004 v8 4Runner is up to 204k miles and has zero issues. Actually never had an issue since I bought it in 2009. Time will tell how my Tacoma holds up, but I am sure I will be keeping my 4Runner for a very long time.

Six automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi, believe using Top Tier Gasoline that contains a higher-percentage of detergent additive from that required by the EPA standard, provides optimal engine performance. They claim that lower concentrations of detergent additive lowers the quality of gasoline and can leave deposits on engine parts, such as fuel injectors and intake valves, which can lower engine performance, vehicle responsiveness and increase emissions. BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota developed the Top Tier standards under which gas retailers must meet in order to qualify as a Top Tier gasoline retailer. Here is a list of retailers that qualify under the standards:

    76 Petro-Canada
    Aloha Petroleum Phillips 66
    Chevron QuikTrip
    Chevron Canada Rebel Oil
    Conoco Road Ranger
    CountryMark Severson Oil
    Entec Stations Shell
    Esso Shell Canada
    Exxon Sunoco Canada
Kwik Trip / Kwik Star Texaco
MFA Oil Co. The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
    Mileage Stations Tri-Par Oil Co.
    Mobil Turkey Hill Minit Markets
    U.S. Oil

That was my first thought too, sounds like OP needs to shop around for another quote from another competent shop.
