I'm looking for anything here. Has anyone lifted the truck and had the diff howl go away? Adding bigger tires help?

    Re-gearing the rearend help?

I'm going crazy and its getting worse.

diff breather mod and switching to lucas 75w90 made a big difference in mine. not 100% gone but id say reduced 75% which is acceptable to me. did both at same time so not sure what helped but my breather was clogged at 8k and there was a fair amount of crud on the drain plug magnet so it needed to be done. the noise reduction was unexpected but welcomed benefit and inexpensive

I just put on 265/70/17 and TRD wheels on my OR and I do not hear the diff sound. I know it is still there. Before I put on new tires and wheels I had the dealer confirm in writing that the truck had a vibration sound in the diff with the oringinal OEM tires and wheels. I am just waiting for Toyota to come out with a TSB. Anyone hear have any updates on the TSB for the diff sound

What's the word on using this oil and voiding the warranty?

Also, would they be able to tell you used a different diff oil if something happened(ie if my diff blows up and has to be towed back to the dealership, would they know I had this other oil in there instead of OEM ?)

no clue. its 75w90 synthetic like the book says to use. i cant see them voiding warranty unless you do something dumb like put motor oil in there. they can probably tell if they sent a sample in for used oil analysis but that would be very extreme and less likely to void warranty than any method you mentioned(big knobby tires, lift, regear etc)

id think the 1.4 qt my front and rear diff combined were missing from the factory would be far worse than using something that doesnt say toyota on the bottle. just did my front diff fluid when i did the ECGS bushing a couple weeks ago. havent done any wheeling so i cant comment on any effect other than the humming is gone but thats due to the bushing and not the oil

I stopped by a Ford dealership thats right next to the Advanced auto parts store (where I went to get the lucas oil). The F150's, which I didn't really consider too much when buying my tacoma, are pretty compelling. The price tag is the only thing that's a bummer, but with the deals they have going on, I'm sure I could get it in the ball-park of a failcoma turd gen.

I'll have to check out their used lots over the next couple of weeks.

someone has to bite the bullet and just bring it to get fixed from an independent shop that specializes in differentials

    Isn't 75w-85 the correct oil?

That's awesome! Any issues so far? Did you get the fancier dash and leather/pleather?

I made the switch, 0 regrets. This truck is the quietest, smoothest riding truck I've owned. No problems so far. XLT 5.0, 302A w/15k on the clock so far. Won't be leaving The Ford family if they keep making vehicles like this. image.jpg
