I doubt he will give me any trouble at all. He called me right away after leaving a message with his insurance agent and talking to a mechanic. Obviously, since this just happened there aren't any answers yet. He was extremely apologetic and we have a good friendship, but as with anyone/anything, I don't want to be on the hook for something I didn't directly do.

Yeah this shit happens alot in the military. " hey man, I'm going underway/deploy can i stash my ride at your place?" Return to a wrecked vehicle. No one cares about your stuff except for you.

Well to make things better. He has my house keys, because he has been house sitting while I've been working out of town. The first time he came over to let my dog out (my room mate was out of town) is when he took my truck keys.

I think it would be foolish of me to say that I didn't know he had the keys because I know he's had to move it and such. I was just under the impression that it going to remain parked in his driveway and moved when needed.

@TrdSurgie I can believe that for sure, but who's insurance does it fall under?

That's not a real rosy feeling I'm getting. This appears similar to how he described the damage on the phone. I might be able to get some good pictures off him now that it's light out. I guess I'll know for sure when I get there in 4 hours.

Your insurance will pay out accordingly if you gave him permission to drive the truck.
They may go to his insurance to collect the funds...
IMO it's not any issue that would break-up a friendship, a deer accident could have happened to you as well.
Keep your chin up, your friend was not negligent in the idea he ran a stop sign or som'n.
No other vehicles are involved. thankfully....

Just imagine if he hit a car after leaving the bar instead of a deer. I'd call the Devine intervention.

"Hit a deer on the way home from the bar" is code for "I was drunk and crashed your truck, sorry bro".

That excuse is the most common one for drunks crashing their cars.

This was 10k worth of damage. Hit at 65 mph. It was also a mule deer, which are typically larger than a white tail.

    WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!

I was a service manager at a Harley Davidson dealership years ago. Id estimate that 25% of all the accident claims were due to 'deer'.....usually at 2AM on the way home from a bar.

    Well here's the good news:

The damage is very minimal. From what I can tell I'll only need a new bumper and fog light assembly. Things are much better than I was expecting. The pictures don't really show it well, but the bumper is pretty scratched and damaged.

My buddy also assured me he is going to pay for all damage as well as an alignment. All things considered, I think I got off pretty lucky.

This would stretch a friendship pretty thin, but i'd also make sure he includes a year of hand wash & wax with his toothbrush. Especially on that wheel. lol
