What should i get for my Tacoma

Hello guys i have a Tacoma 2002 TRD 4x4, i want to install coilovers for the trails, i was looking at the FOX coil overs with reservoir for the front and the Fox Shocks with reservoir for the back, my question is would this be enough for the lift? or do i need something else to raise the back i want to raise the front 3in.

My second question is how would this setup perform on the trails? I am also getting 33 in Mud terrain tires, Is this a good set up? i am open to any recomendations.

For the rear you can do an add a leaf, or a whole new leaf pack. Don't go Pro Comp, Their quality in shocks sucks.

 

Then who would you recommed going with?

 

Icon, Fox, Kings, Race Runners, Light Racing.

And deavers in the rear

 

yeah, pro comp is crap. esp for the 1st gens...it's a 4" DB spacer lift. no bueno. OP is def on the right track looking at fox CO's and the rear resi shocks.

that fox set up with some deavers or a decent AAL will blow your mind on the trails as well as the street.

 

What do you mean by deavers or AAL??

So if i put the Fox Shocks with reservoir in the back i still need to install ADD a leaf pack to lift it 3 inches?

 

yeah the shocks wont lift the truck, you get lift from the rear leaf springs.

AAL is and add a leaf that is installed into the leaf pack to give you lift

when people say deaver they are talking about a brand new leaf pack, totally replacing the stock leafs

So pretty much all i need to complete this set up is Front Fox Coilovers with reservoirs, Back Shocks with reservoir and AAL.

Do i need a Diff Drop Kit or any thing extra? would i have any alignment problems with this kit? what about Upper control Arm? necesary would it be sooo much nicer if i add one? or just the Coil overs is enough?

Well It depends, You might want to look towards the diff drop kit if you are planning on 3+ inches of lift. Also when you do that you should get some UCA or your ball joint is going to wear out fast.

 

yeah, new UCA's would prob be a good idea. whats your budget look like? dont forget once you lift the truck your gonna wanna throw some bigger tires under there.

 

My budget is about $3,000 for everything

I saw the front coil overs for 1200

Rear Shocks 189 each

Tires, 200 each (33 Mud Terrain)

thats about $2,400

Can you guys recomend me a good brand of UCA? i read some of the Fox Coilovers are made for vehicles with TOTAL CHAOS Upper Control Arm Kit

 

when they descride a coilover as being made to be used with the TC UCA is is the extended travel version of the CO and will give you some extra susp travel when used with an aftermarket UCA. camburg and total chaos both make great products. i have camburg UCA's on my truck right now and i'm swapping out to a total chaos long travel kit very shortly if you would be interested in my used camburg UCA's. they are in great condition and you could save a couple hundred bucks from buying new ones.

also take into consideration that with 33s, you may want to regear when you notice your MPGs and power decrease... since you have 2 differentials to regear, you are looking at about $700 per diff in parts and labor...

About the regearing, should i stay with a smaller size tire so i don't have to regear? and if i do regear would this affect my Top Speed?

as for gearing, the higher the gearing, the better your top end... for those of us who desert pre run, we like 4.88s... the rock crawler guys, like 3.91s and so forth...

with 33s, a happy medium is 4.56

with 32s, you could get away with the stock 4.10s though... its not too bad... plus, with 32s, you wont need to crank up the coilovers so high as the higher you lift, the stiffer the ride...

 

He should be good with a good 285/75/16. its a hair under a 33. and your mpg's and power loss wont drop all that much.

i been running that size tire in a MT for 3 years now and i fill up twice a week and thats not even commuting...

on weekend wheeling trips, im filling up 2 to 3 times between sat and sun...
