Cleaning K&N Filter-F'ed Up

So im done oiling the cone intake filter and it says the inside should also be red but mine isnt red at all on the inside...i didnt go up and down the pleats i went left to right...did i mess up?..should it be red inside?...should i add more oil? damn so complicated

 

exactly why im worried about oiling it more but if the inside should be red then maybe i have too little oil?

 

Don't worry about the color, just follow the oiling instructions and you'll be fine. Only you can know if you over oiled it.

 

just lightly coat the top. just spray it evenly along the edges and it will be fine. If you think you over did it..use the saop and water and let it dry and try the spray again You dont want it to be soaking wet with the oil...its just to coat the outside so it traps the dirt on the outside of the filter

 

Uh do NOT use soap on the filter.................... use the K&N cleaning solution. If you just cleaned it you can just rinse it back down, let it dry, and re-apply. You should go along the pleats, and you should add enough oil to see some red on the intake side.. just lightly. Not enough oil is almost as bad as too much.... it won't filter much without the oil.

Also, yes go with the grooves, not against them...

You are the one making this complicated - as the procedure really isn't.

If you are so worried about this, re clean, dry, and oil the correct way. If the instructions direct you to add oil until the inside of the cone is red, then add oil until the inside of the cone is red...

 

Looks a bit heavy to me, but it's hard to tell from a picture...

 

well actually im not really complicating it..i have the whole weekend where i wont need my truck so i want to get it right as well as entertain myself...if i didnt have the time i would have cleaned and oiled it and just threw it back in

If you are still uncomfortable google "K&N Filter Oiling" or something. Not trying to be a smart ass here but you answered your own question in your first post. Only YOU can decide what you have done is sufficient or not as you can't tell squat over the internet with a picture, or see inside your cone filter where the apparent problem is located.

It looks fine
Just wipe the rubber material down with a dry clean rag so you are sure no extra oil is on those parts.

A new filter freshly oiled will be a pinkish red inside.

After it gets used for a little over 250,000 miles like the one in my 79 Toy truck eventually went, no matter how long you soak it in the cleaner it will look black

Don't worry if it looks a little dirty when you next check it, the K&N filter really well when dirty and nasty looking.

I bought my first K&N the day Mount Saint Helens erupted and spewed tons of ash into the air, for weeks you could wash your truck and an hour later see a light layer of powder across the hood, many people running paper filters found the cheap paper did one of two things, plugged and became useless or didn't filter out the ash and let it into the motor, neither was good.

 

You could sell your intake and get an AFE dry.......
