Toyota doesn't refuse to turn off the seatbelt alarm because of liability. Most other car manufacturers allow the driver to turn it off themselves. All my Fords can turn off their seatbelt alarms, our subaru can turn it off, yet they aren't sued...

That's why ever vehicle sold in the U.S. has to have it (and belts).

Thats not a mandate. It's a request for comment regarding making changes to "encourage" more seat belt use.

You are missing the actual regulation..That document is a request for comment to encourage seat belt use. Read the summary..../facepalm

You're correct it's not the rulemaking of the old rule but a petition to amend an the existing regulation:

"This document requests public comments on a petition for rulemaking submitted by Public Citizen and Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, to amend the Federal motor vehicle safety standard on occupant crash protection to require automobile manufacturers to install seat belt reminder systems for rear designated seating positions in light passenger vehicles."

Auto makers don't put that stuff in because they think it's a good idea. (and no, I'm not going to dig out the regulation that says you have to have belts, taillights etc. to manufacture or import vehicles into the U.S.

It is not against any law. Its just a matter of the dealer willing to do it.

 

No one is arguing about whether or not a vehicle is required to have seatbelt. WTF are you talking about.

You said seatbelt reminders are federally mandated.

Perhaps I've caused you to misunderstand me. I agree, it's not illegal to turn the system off. But it's mandated the vehicle be built with it.

I turned mine off 'cause I can't stand it.

The damn reminder is a mandated system. I don't believe it's illegal in most states to turn it off. My point is that from a liability standpoint dealers are hesitant to turn it off.

The point is, the dealer shouldn´t be hesitant, because Toyota made it an option to be turned off. If there was any liability issues there would be no way to turn it off without major modification/destruction. Its as simple as hook up computer, switch to off. If customer wants it back on later its just as simple to turn back on. So if anything, the Liability if any, would fall on Toyota, not the dealer.

Again....no one is arguing that they aren't installed, only that its not illegal to turn off.

Try ALL states unless its a STATE requirement.

Perhaps you'll win this argument, but I turned mine off and it doesn't "alarm" for 4 seconds anymore either. It's gone.

But, I have to go to bed, so I'll bow out.

 

In for 10k service this morning, out with no more seat belt alarms. Service tech tried to play it off like he wasn't sure they could do it, after assuring him they could and only they could(unlike my 2005 Tundra), he changed his tune and said it may take a little longer but he'll get a tech to plug in and turn it off. Got the feeling they don't like doing stuff they don't get paid on, but then again who does?

 

Probably where he pulled it out of... his rear end.
