255/85/16s or 285/75/16?

One point in this I didn't understand,When going with a taller tire..Having to lower the bumpstops.

 

..Never mind.Re-read it.Lowering the bumpstops pertains to the wider tires.

 

Thanks man. That helps. I really just want a tire that looks really tall on the truck but not too wide. But in that picture the 285s look about as tall as the 255s. Any opinions on height on these? I think if I use those Spidertrax it will give me a good look with 255s

 

The one in the first picture on the left has 255s but on the right(yours) has 285s, right?

Or did your truck have 255s in the first picture and then go to the 285s in the 2nd picture?

does anyone have a side by side tire pic of the 2? i dont think ill mind the little bit skinnier tire, but i want to know if the height difference is enough. as for cost im finding a significant difference on the 255 vs the 285s

 

im running 255 bfg mud terrains on my 09 and i couldn't ask for better. they only downfall is they get a little scary on wet pavement but thats expected with any mt.

 

With the right wheel or wheel backspacing definitely the 255s. I know its a truck but have you ever looked at a 255 car tire? Its pretty wide when its 255/40. There is a member on here with 255/85 on mt classic locks where it looks perfect. Can't remember the name though.

Tires, such a difficult subject. Ok Im new to this forum and Im having the same problem. I have 10 DC TRD Sport and Im trying to figure out what tires will fit. Im planning on a 3" front spacer lift for now until I can do the UCA with coilovers. I heard from a buddy who dropped from a 17" rim to a 16" and he said that the fit of the rim clearing the caliper once it is mounted and balanced it tight. Has anyone had any problems with this? Im also wanting to leave the rear end how it is. Will a 285 fit? being that whatever rim I choose to go with. Im looking at the ATX chamber teflon. Will that clear the front end with minimal trimming and minimal rub? If not looks like I'll be going to the little 265's.

 

on what? i have looked at the tire claculator on here and its only about a 1/4" if i remember right. what should i read on?

 

i was more so wanting the height difference. you picture helped with the width and from the two you can barely tell which is which. you picture helps with that but not heights. sorry for the confusion

 

oh nevermind i found a picture on that expeditionswest site. here it is for anyone else wondering.

 

IIRC a 255/85/16 is a big 33" tire while a 285/75/16 is a small 33" tire. There's enough inconsistency with manufacturing oversized tires that you can't nail down a solid difference but a 255/85/16 is slightly taller and considerably narrower, which means less trimming to fit. Just extended bump stops so you don't stuff your taller tire into your wheel well and damage something.

How much of a difference in price is there in 285s and 255s? Im guessing 255s are going to be more expensive.
