You asked for opinions of the engine options, likely to make yourself feel better about your purchase. What did you expect?

I owned a 2016 Sr 2.7 Auto 4x4 AC and the fuel economy was slightly better by 1 or 2 mpg than my 17 OffRoad Auto 4x4 DCLB. Everyones driving habits are different but I have experienced both trucks and agree with slightly better fuel economy. The 2.7 loves high revs over steep climbs. Both are awesome trucks!

I don't think the troll comment was directed at you. You were asking a very legitimate question. I believe the troll label was directed at the moron that first replied to your post.

Congrats on the new tacoma! You're coming from high standards (nissan VQ series), but the 2.7 is a bulletproof little engine, I'm loving mine!

No troll. The 2016-17 Tacoma V6 is uncharacteristically loud for a Toyota V6 even at idle: https://youtu.be/JrcW4NyD8XI

I also see no real problem with the 4 cylinder.

Many people just seem infatuated with the latest and "greatest", whether it be an engine, tech packages, both .... ? So many people let image and identity choose their vehicles for them, it cracks me up. I've been there, done that ... and I get that "must have (X) trim package" feeling, even if isn't the practical choice.

At this stage of my life (38, new home owner, about to start family) I put proven reliability above all of the above, so the 2.7L is perfect for me. Sure, more towing power and a double cab with MT would have suited more of my future needs ... but not at the ridiculous price that is being asked for a vehicle class that has all but been completely riddled with issues due to aggressive CAFE standards. Perhaps once the bugs are worked out, I can upgrade to a proven 3.5L many years from now.

I can freely admit that a V6 w/ MT DC(x)B would be better for my situation (I can afford it). What I cannot afford is a vehicle that might not get me from point A to point B. There seems to be many happy, relatively high mileage 3.5L drivers who are free of issues ... but it's still not worth the risk in my eyes. Even if Toyota brought a diesel over here for 2017, or even a turbo/supercharged petrol 4 ... I would still have waited to see how it performed over a few years before buying anything other than the tried and true 2.7L (with a few tweaks as of 2015, of course).

I just took a trip out to Ickesburg,PA for the first time with the new truck. General route was i78W, to 81, to 322. There are quite a few very hilly sections where loaded up semi trucks have difficulty maintaining the speed limit. So many on here complain about having to downshift in the 2.7L to get up hills on a hwy, but I was fine in 5th gear with cc on the entire way. 0 problems with passing power as well. I only had one passenger and about 300lbs of gear for the weekend, mind you. This also got me 23.6mpg at 65-70mph.

TL;DR: 2.7L is teh greatest evar. Justin Bieber for president, 911 was an inside job, the n-word, bababooey, 3.5L is the devil. #almostgotaridgeline

That sound on the highway in the video when you punch it is awesome. That's exactly what I am talking about. Sounds like a freaking race car ! Very cool. People are amazed when I take them for a ride and the acceleration is amazing. They are like WTF ? 300 hp kicking in ! Thanks for posting the vid.

I like the 4 because I'm pretty confident mine will go 300k with just basic maintenance, which I can mostly do myself with ease. Not too many engines out there I can say that about, definitely not this new V6.

It's not just the upfront savings.

That sounds like fud. The 4 might be proven, but the 6 hasn't shown itself to not be capable. Most people are complaining about the auto transmission, not the engine. I have a 7 year 100k warranty. If it's gonna have issues, they'll likely be before then or showing evidence of future issues.

A fair point, but I don't think anything can match the 4 on longevity and cheap operating costs.

still sounds like fud to me. i dont think it has been proven either way how reliable the new v6 is. almost any engine built nowadays is going to last a real damn long time.

If you look at Toyotas history, you will see that all of their V6 truck models have had problems. Their track record on the truck V-6 is not good. I had an 89 , 93 and an 05 with a V6 and all had head gasket issues which is well-known. It will be 10 years before we know if this new V-6 is really good. Which is why I ordered my new Tacoma with the 2.7 , but my 16 4Runner has the 4.0 V6
