Yeah, 2 small businesses of 29 years.

What I do for work doesn't translate into anything outside of the niche, and frankly I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't a family venture.

So it's a total change of environment no matter what I do. The local 551 IBEW is around the corner from me, but unless I suck at reading, looks like wages are significantly less than I would have guessed.

    A few things
Look into a skilled trade (pipe trades, electrician, sheet metal etc.). I'm a fire sprinkler fitter, part of the pipe trade. A few things to think about, your location, most of the work is in sf and south. If you are ok with commuting then it's no big deal. It also depends on the union local (if you want to be union). Some trade locals are smaller territory wise than others. My trade covers 9 Bay Area counties, from Morgan Hill to Santa Rosa. While others like electricians have several locals throughout the Bay Area. Journeyman skilled trade money is good and on average in the high $50's to low $60's at the moment.
Construction is also very up and down with the economy. When the economy tanked a few years ago, a lot of guys were out of work for a while. But if you are a hard worker company's will keep you working.
It can also take a major toll on your body. I'm 40 and have been through a major back surgery and 2 elbow surgeries which I am off recovering from one at the moment and have another next year.
@jqueener and @the glen are guys to hit up about it too.

pipe fitting is one of the most physical work out there but pays top dollar. Plumbing is pretty much the same. mechanical and electrical are a little less physical depending on what type of work your doing. electrical dosnt pay as well as most trades unless you work as an IBEW union worker in the bay area. the unions up here suck ass for electrical. I wish I would of went through mechanical side of the trade and be a start up guy. HVAC start up would be gravy.

who do you work for? as low volt, do you mean data comm. or just under 600v ? Im thinking about leaving the state. we haven't had a raise in almost two yrs. metical keeps going up meaning the pay check has gone backwards the last two yrs. I made more as an apprentice on the outside, the only benefit to working with the state is vacation time. I get almost two mounts of payed time off if you count holidays and sick time. The retirement is going to shit at the rate are pay scale is going backward.

Hell if I know. I told her at the rate it keeps raining, don't worry about it. I'll be more than happy to rub her down myself after our extended time apart... IYKWIM.

The interior is a mess, but I'm going to be ripping out all of my old shitty wiring jobs and redoing everything so I can just clean and tidy after that.

Called DSM this morning, left a message for Micah. Haven't heard back. Just called back. Twice. Both times: all circuits are busy...

My old neighbor is a master plumber, foreman on surgical gas installation at a major hospital expansion, etc. He helped me put in new city supply, replace my water heater, etc., and was doing a ton of work on his house. It is physical, backbreaking, dirty work. And I hate crawl spaces. But I learned a lot from him very quickly.
