Had an 07 DC TRD Offroad. At 60k, traded it due to persistent blue smoke, which dealer said could be "a big problem." I was torn between same truck and F150. Bought 2010 TRD Sport, DC. Every turn of the ignition I peered at the passenger RV mirror, hoping not to see puff of blue smoke. At 2,123 miles, started it and, low and behold, this morning my garage filled with blue smoke. Heart sank. My earlier referenced spongy brakes issue persists, and now Toyota's name is smeared by their own inability to come clean with a huge recall fiasco. No truck is perfect, but I'm leaning towards taking a hit on the Taco and getting into an F150. Question: am I overreacting?

As much as this is a Tacoma forum, I'm a huge fan of F150s. I've never driven a second gen taco (mines a first gen) but I can say that my friends 2004 F150 is great. Hes at about 70k on it and hasnt had an issue other than some coil coming loose in the engine. it was a quick fix though; his company mechanic literally reached in and connected it again.

A 2010 with 2100 miles and thinking of trading?
    Garage full of blue smoke?
Take it to your dealer for the fix.

Either that or quit putting 2-cycle gas in the truck.

I have never heard of a smoking problem with Toyota. Blue smoke, valve guides? Dealer give you any idea what it might be on your older truck? Your under warranty now on the 2010, get it fixed and let us know. I have 12,000 on my 09 and don't have any problems so far.

Sounds to me like your dealer is doing something wrong with the trucks. I havent heard of anyone else having this problem.

I don't think you're over reacting, I would be very p*ssed if I got a new truck and it had those problems.
Won't the dealer swap you in a new engine under warrenty? I would ask them about that.

As far as the whole gas pedal fiasco I am not too sure what to think. I would say that the media is once again blowing everything out of proportion and I will just leave it at that.

I do like the F-150s though. Driven a 2007 and I seriously considered getting one when I was shopping for my toyota but the tacoma suits me perfectly and now I would not consider anything else.

Good luck to you whatever you decide, keep us posted.

Funny. I've managed to avoid the temptation of adding 2-cycle oil to the gas... "garage full" is me exagerating a bit, but still a decent enough puff to cause worry. The dealer's a crook, and apparently not very intelligent, as their stock response tends to be "I dunno what dat could be..."

Sounds like your dealer employs crack heads. Start a complaint with corporate and get it fixed. There is absolutely no reason it should be smoking this early. Blue smoke is a signature of oil in the valves... Now, if it's only on start it'd make sense on a turbo vehicle, but these are not turbo unless you added it... More than likely it doesn't need a new engine, just some head work. The only other thing is, it's either something the dealer is doing, or something you are doing. You're not starting it with the throttle at WOT are you?

And try a different fuel station.

I am not sure if you're seeing the residual effects of the emissions system during startup since the RPMs are increased so more exhaust would be normal. A blueish tint would suggest oil burning of some sort. Change up where you fill up as well. See if the problem persists.

As far as the brakes are concerned find a dealership that can adequately address your problems. Drive another '10 on the lot and see if it shares the same characteristics as your truck.

wow so many issues with the 2nd gens looks like toyota needs to build them alittle better like the 1st gen earlier. My brother gave me his '77 corolla that he bagged for nine yrs of high school/college etc and I really bagged it for 2 yrs even a trip to vegas held it at 85 to 90mph both ways about 3000 miles total never missed abeat. In 11 yrs of ownership it had tires oil brakes and a battery and waterpump changed. Now that is a quality built car. Just my .02 cents
