    I have never used a winch and am looking at getting one for light use. Have any one ever bought a Desert Rat Bulldog 8000? I like warn because of the name they have built but I would only use my winch a couple of times a yr. What do you guys think would be good to get for some what cheap. I know you get what you pay for and I dont want to have it break down when i need it

    Another private label of the units that the Chinese company that builds most of these things (see prior post). IMO I would go with SmittyBilt or Superwinch due to the customer support (if you are going to buy one of the winches manufactured by this Chinese company). JMO but I have had great response from their support and warranty people.

    So which one should i get? I hunt and camp and do light wheeling but it snows a good amount where i hunt. I want it to last a fair amount of time with mait.

    Well I wouldn't get one too small - An 8k should be adequate for a truck like ours but 9-10 can't hurt. I got a good show deal (4wheepparts) on an XRC 8 with synth line but others should do the job.

    The only word of caution is to read up on proper handling and use. As much as they are used casually these things can be one of the most dangerous parts to wheeling if used wrong. - GJbonner has a great write up on this board that should be a must read for anyone using a winch and as he would say... JMO! :)

    gotcha.. didn't check the link... mine originally came with steel cable and i replaced it.. but anyways.. i love the winch. its inexpensive and does a great job. is a touch slower than say a warn but is that really an issue when doing a recovery??? not to me. i've worked the heck out of mine thus far with no issues.

    Yes you can change out the fairlead. Mine came with the roller and when I picked up my synthetic I also picked up a Hawse fairlead.
