My woman's aunts place in San Jose is a 50s house and was totally original in every single way but exterior paint and appraised at $850k. It's a total fixer upper at that price.

She's a public health nurse in her 60s and the place got paid off last year so now she's upgrading and modernizing it. Will likely do so, sell it for Santa Clara money and move to our area and pay cash for a house closer to family. She's retiring tomorrow, actually, from a county position.

My mom just did this. Left with 1.8M and went to Idaho. I'm pretty sure the money will last way longer as she told me the place next door to her was for sale at 286K. I have to say, it's attractive.

We almost bought in NC when we lived there just because it's so fucking cheap.

I really considered buying a house on land in SC for next to nothing and renting it out, then renting here in CA until it was paid for. Then I'd at least always have something to fall back on if needed. Didn't end up going for it which I'm happy with now, but tempting.

We want 2/3 - 3/4 acre here with a modest sized home and a shop space. Hopefully only going to move twice before we get there.

yes the dangers are crazy working for cal trans, that's why i went to DGS, the retirement has been dumb-ed down and isn't as good as it used to be. every yr they want us to pay more into it as cal peers is loosing money faster then they are gaining. They want use to pay 4.5 % of are wage into retirees medical. and only give us 10% raise. over four yrs.plus medical keeps going up.regardless of raises and we haven't had a raise in almost 2 yrs. we are talking about a strike. so if that happens your dad will be stressed as he will be working for his crew.I know are sups are worried they will have to take over for us. If your dad got in before they screwed up the retirement then he will do good.as for me I will have to put in 30 yrs to get about 70% of my pay for retirement, that im forced to pay into.at that age i will be 67 and most likely dead. unlike a 401k were you can choose how its invested. Now i can retire sooner but its dramatically less. But your right about the rest stability, good medical, lots of paid time off. that works for me and raising my son. overall im happy with my job, but im taking classes to promote so when i do get to that retirement age i can afford to take 50% and retire sooner and not after im dead.

Yea he got in and grandfathered in right before it changed the first time. People always complain about overpaid state workers but they are clueless. I make more than my dad does in a safer environment with less stress and responsibility and I can choose how my money is invested.
