Fumoto valve or magnetic drain bolt?

I agree, but then again I've never attempted to get cactus in mine. Seems risky to me.

 

You can hang your wiener out of your window and drive through a cactus field without getting a prick in your prick. I did it once so it's not possible to ever happen.

That proves that only 1.5" of extension is safe from catching unwanted obstacles off-road.

So then fumoto drain valves are safe without the need for a skid?

 

I have a GoldPlug mag drain plug and have done two oil changes with it.

- No metal shavings observed on the magnet (I have about 54,000 miles on the truck). Unlike the differentials, the engine oil has a fine-element filter. I'm starting to think a magnet isn't necessary.
- Threading in the plug is inconvenient,, because the strong magnet likes to stick to the side of the hole. Made worse if you have an aftermarket skid with a small cutout.

Well, I'd say given the lack of complaints associated with failures that it's a rare possibility, but STILL remains a possibility. Skids are a good idea IMO if you have a fumoto valve or not.

My plan was to swap mine from my Tacoma to my wife's 4Runner because her drain valve is recessed up and out of the way of anything between two sections of skid plates. Mine is just kinda hanging out in the open.

What year 4Runner? A Fumoto is kinda pointless if you have to deal with that cartridge filter on 2010+ 4Runners. Same reason I'm not using a Fumoto on my Subaru - the oil filter surrounded by catalytic converter heatshields always gets my hand dirty.

 

If it protrudes, it can be knocked off. Thats the simple fact. It might be rare. It might have never once happened. But it CAN happen and the result is a $3000 engine rebuild bill. Use a skid.

 

Not gonna lie - I would have driven over that palm frond too, except that those things have the sharpest points on them I'd be wary about getting a flat in the excellent way you got your trans caught in neutral. Mall crawling does have it's dangers - the cellphone text / talker while driving-er, the soccer mom with unruly kids backer-upper, and most lethal in these parts: the "Oh was that a stop sign? Ah screw it, I'm in a parking lot-er." The most dangerous thing about driving is other drivers so at least out in the sticks you only have to worry about yourself lol. I respect your choice to run over that palm branch, but am disappointed that you didn't buy a lottery ticket that day!

 

If this we're the case, there would be no reason for skid plates in the first place. If you wheel, you'll want a skid protecting the valve.

I don't do any serious wheeling, mostly farm and gravel roads, but I assume if you're wheeling or rock crawling than you should have skids regardless. Anyway I like my fumoto, it suits my needs and my driving. If I hit something hard enough to tear the valve off than I'm in big trouble.
