3rd Gen suspension on 2nd Gen?

I searched but couldn't find anything on point (mostly stuff about 2nd Gen kits working on 3rd Gen), but i have read that the 3rd gen stock suspension is about 1" higher than the 2nd Gen. My question is, if that is the case, is the stock suspension compatible with 2nd Gen?

I am about to order 5100's and an aal for my 2014 DCSB OR, but i see a lot of take off 3rd gen suspensions for super cheap with practically no miles on them, and if that gives 1" of lift, may do that instead.

 

yup, the front springs off the 2nd gen are slightly different, they will give you 1in of lift.

 

Ya I bought practically new 3rd-gen OR shocks for my 2nd-gen. I drive a lot of highway and just wanted the OR shocks since they leveled it a bit. I might lift the truck at a later time, but for right now it does perfect for my long work commute, hauling bikes on weekends and mild off-roading. Looks better, rides nice.

 

Did you do shocks and springs, or just shocks? just fronts or rear too?

 

I did the complete shock / spring set-up in the front and also did the rear shocks. The rear is no different in height but the front is about an inch higher now. My stock shocks were almost new also, as my truck was still basically new when I did it. So it wasn't because my oem shocks were sagged out or anything. And I did align after install.

In the 3rd gen for sale forum... i looked yesterday and saw at least 3 for around $100 total (f/r shocks and front coils). I'll probably just wait for one to pop up close to Atlanta.

I have seen a few with rear leafs included as well. Anyone know if those are compatible?

I notice those two links and the others I found are mostly Hitachi. I have also seen a set of Bilsteins the blue and yellow version claimed to be from a 2016. Anyone know what actually came on the 2016 or 17? Seems odd they would have different brands. Could that be because one was SR5 and the others OR?

 

Not sure about the regular Tacos, but Toyota switched to Fox on the 17 Taco Pros so maybe they switched brands on the others as well. I have a friend who just pulled all the stuff off of his 17 TRD OR, I can see if he is selling them if anyone wants...

 

yeah I noticed that too, I think the OR have the bilsteins, but i also saw a set that said it was a sport that wasn't bilstein. My buddy has a 17 sport i can have him take a look and see what his are. I can see the SR5 being different.

 

Aftermarket will give better performance than OEM so why go 3rd gen?

 

- $100 vs. $500-$600
- don't have to have coils seated (assuming whoever took them off kept them assembled)
- new or near new springs (as opposed to my stock springs on 5100's, otherwise add another $150-$175 to the above prices)
- 1" or so lift
- from riding in my buddies 17 sport, the ride feels better to me.

I'll probably still go with 5100s and prog. aal, but wanted to know my options.

Correct. I have '16 OR and they are Bilsteins.

By all means aftermarket is the way to go in most cases. For me, I commute long highway and while the truck is going to be my DD for awhile, I didn't want to lift it more than an inch anyways. For the price, it made sense to level it out and upgrade the shocks for now, since I do offroad mildly. Then later on when I can not have to DD the truck as much, I will likely lift it more with a full aftermarket set-up.

 

Are there any differences between the second and third gen OEM UCAs?

 

I recently installed 3rd gen Bilstein suspension on my 2012, it was a very cheap and easy suspension refresh kit. Since it had front springs/shocks assembled I didn't even need a spring compressor. it also came with UCA, rear springs and u-bolts.

I can confirm it did give me a 3/4" height gain up front. feels much better than my worn shocks.

I compared both my 2nd gen UCA and 3rd Gen, I didn't see any differences, so i didn't change it out.

 

Did this with the hitachis and am happy. They are firmer than the 2nd gen oem setup. I added a 1/2 spacer two get a total of 2 inches up front. Added an aal for the rear. Couldn't be happier for $135 bucks in parts and some beers and bbq for my friends.
