I agree with you guys, but we all have to admit, things are becoming a little too equal these days. Mini trucks used to be a joke to everyone in the US (think late 70's and early 80's), but Toyota made a name for themselves despite the odds. Earning brand loyalty works for a little while, but not forever if quality diminishes.

I completely side-tracked this thread... Mine is not leaking, thank God.

My dad had an old 84 Toyota pickup that ran like a champ, it was ugly as hell but it ran forever. I have an 06 Tacoma. I love my truck but I agree Toyota's aren't even close to what they used to be. So far I had to replace
    -Front axels
    -Upper control arms
    -Lower control arms
    -Rack and pinion
    -Leaf springs
    -Frame
    -U joints
    -Tie rods
Some of it was normal wear and tear stuff that was expected but I don't remember doing anything but changing the oil and brakes on my dads old Toyota. My wife was driving an 09 Camry and it was eating up oil like crazy. Dealer said adding one quart of oil every 1200 miles was considered normal?!? What!!! We traded it in for a venza and 3 months later the abs sensor needed replaced. This is B.S. If it wasn't for Tacoma world making it so easy to do your own repairs I would have sold my truck a long time ago. But I agree, where do you turn? Problems are unavoidable no matter what you buy I guess.

I'm having that same problem right now at 999600 miles. Still under warranty how did they fix that issue. Or just trade it in. They fixed it once but it's back at the dealer.

That's 391 miles per day, every single day for 7 years. DAMN!

And how is that still under warranty?

I got the extended waranty. I commute 90 miles a day to work. Took it in early for the 100k service told them the change out all my tyranny and diff fluid. It was leaking when I got to work. Looked down down my transmission is leaking and I seen my bell housing had oil on it too. I paid these supposedly ase to inspect my truck and they dont say nothing. Took the truck back they said the tech didnt torque the plug. Or it was I defective washer bs. I was like how about my main seal. Oh we wiped it cleaned drive it for 500 miles and bring it back. I'm like no it will be out of warranty. I drove it for 20 miles it same peak. Now they trying to fix it.

So you don't really have almost a million miles on a '12.

    :) that’s more like it!

Yes it shouldn’t be a problem. In my case they changed what was needed. Hasn’t been an issue since then.

Old cars. 30's 40's 50's. They used a different formulation for their seals, which worked with the blends of oils on the market during those time frames.

Modern cars use a different formula for seal construction. Synthetic won't bother them.

The leaking seal is either improperly manufactured in tolerance, or missing grease on the riding surface at time of construction. Causing premature wear.

Lots of heavy silty water crossings can reduce the life span of all rotating seals as well.

Looks like mine is leaking as well at 56k miles. A buddy of mine had a small amount of oil leaking from the front of his oil pan and said it stopped when he switched from synthetic to conventional oil.

    Thread revive

was taking off skids to eventually do my transmission fluid drain/fill

noticed mine too except it’s pretty dry even when I take the little plug off.

makes me wonder if this is just grease from the u joint spinning and slinging it over. Very hard to tell as there isn’t any “oily” mess or anything so maybe a very slow leak or grease sling ‍♂️…..thoughts ?

I’d have to crawl under mine and take a look at where the joints are. But I don’t remember that being a spot where grease is slung. I won’t be home for a few hours. But I’ll be happy to crawl under mine and see.

    thanks…
I cleaned it up with brake cleaner and will also just keep an eye on it.

I was just assuming grease since most my other joints seem to sling in a similar pattern.
Here is a few pic of my other joints and the grease sling….I at least hope this is all it is :)

    Yeah,I’ll take a look.
    Mine has grease sling too.

I had this picture I took for some reason on my phone. You can see the sling line pretty good. It gets on the actuator, but I never had any problems. So I don’t wipe it off.

Mine doesn’t show the grease there.
    It’s further back.

I did see, that is the zerk for the front driveshaft. The front driveshaft doesn’t spin unless you are in 4WD.

    I don’t drive in 4WD often, and when I do it’s slow.

I don’t think what you are sing is a rear main leak. I don’t see enough evidence of one in your picture where you pulled the inspection plate. I’d expect it to more wet.

If say you don’t have anything to worry about. I’m betting it’s grease.
