    The brackets do not go between the lights and the tailgate.

    You need to remove the lights and slide the bracket between the lights and the hole in the body. The bracket holes line up with the two mounting screws.

    I just bought some used ones from a member here and I got them to fit. I had to push real hard to squeeze the bracket against the gate frame.

    Mine is a 2012, so I don't see where there could be a gap issue with your 2014 !!???
