2017's have updated Auto Trans Software?

Normally, this shift flare occurs on the first acceleration, through 4th gear, from a cold start, and on the first or second acceleration. If you want to maximize your chance of recreating the issue, when you take it to the dealer, then you want the transmission as cold as possible and running for the least possible time. Therefore, if you leave the truck overnight, and if you park the truck close to the exit of the dealership (adjacent to a main road), and you can assure reaching 4th gear on your first acceleration, you should be likely to demonstrate the issue to the tech.

 

2017s do NOT come from factory with re flash.
3.5L has more torque in the higher end.
4.0L has more torque in the lower end.

Test drive both.. see which floats your boat.

If you go with the 3.5L buy the one with 3 pedals. If you go with 4.0L the 5 speed Auto is tried and true. I know because I've owned both.

 

7/ 16 build shifts fine, good gas mileage but have a slight delay from reverse to drive. On the fence if I should get the up date..

 

The 2017s are not applicable to the TSB. If they needed the update, they would be.
Why is that ?

 

My 2017 built in 9/16 does not have the updated software, it is currently in the shop getting new software among a list of other things at 700 miles...

Because the TSB can also mask transmission valve body mis-engineering.

 

I have a 2017 and I'm getting the transfer tsb done Friday. Havnt noticed R to D problem but it does hunt for gears uphill. Also doesn't like to shift to 6th when cruise is on. This along with ECGS bushing install.

It's the bushing install instead of the needle bearing for the cyclic vibration issue a lot of us have. Installed on front drivers side diff.

 

East Coast Gear Supply bushing? Can you describe what causes the needle bearing to fail? Is this only a problem when you lift the truck?

 

It's not that they fail. Poor design from toyota. Some tacomas, stock or lifted develop a vibration that cycles due to a lot of play in the bearing. In my truck mostly noticeable between 35-55. Dealer replaced bearing at 300 miles. Started again at 450. East coast gear supply made a bushing to replace the bearing. Slightly longer and tighter tolerances. Seems to work for most. Dealer is paying for everything. Many dealers won't do bushing since it's not a toyota part.

 

I will say that I've heard it is more noticeable "or" starts after a small lift? Mine came lifted from the dealer so everything is covered under warranty

 

Interesting. This is the first I heard of this one. Then again, I am a rookie with the Toyotas.

 

I need to check if our '17 is applicable to the TSB. The trans hunts for gears a lot on the highway and doesn't like to upshift and stays in 5th a lot. But I'm hoping it's because the ECU hasn't learned our habits yet as we only have like 800 miles...

 

Imo it shouldn't have to learn anyone's driving habits to shift into 6th while driving at a constant speed, say 60, on a flat road.

How do you check for that?

I took my truck to the dealership and they said there is NO TSB for 2017 whatsoever and refused to perform any work. They advised to wait for an official TSB from toyota. WTH?

My truck seems to jump when the engine is still cold and when i come to a stop. Feel like someone was hitting me from the behind. The RPM also stuck at 3000 RPM for about 7 seconds when accelerate over 60 mph and released the gas pedal. Not to mention the rear howling noise when I go over 65 mph. AND the rear window wind noise drives me crazy; It sounds like I always have the rear window opened.

Can't wait for the 2017 4runner to be released so I can trade in.

 

Is this the same as the "rumble strip"-like issue people are feeling?
