Five gallons of gas will get me 75 miles on good roads carrying a light load- like a lot of the other Tacomas on here I average 15mpg mixed driving. Carrying extra weight and going off-road, especially if you're crawling in 4lo, you are going to use a lot more fuel. You need to take that into consideration when planning your fuel needs for whatever your intended trip.

This is exactly what I do. I have a couple motorcycles and so happen to have a couple 5-gallon jugs anyway... this is a convenience you may not enjoy, but still likely to be the easiest and cheapest option.
Just be sure they are strapped in well enough to stay upright during the driving you plan to be doing :)

So, is it bad to leave a tank full with gas in your bed for extended periods of time? If so, why? Pardon my newb question. Does too much pressure build up in the can or what?

i think its fine. For me I have a camper shell and I sleep back there so wouldnt want to put fuel back there. Also I have read that no matter where they are stored you may need to burp the fuel every now and then, ie open the cap and let out the vapor.

I like this, but appox. 18 pounds hanging on the rail not supported on the bottom could that cause some problems?

It hasn't for me so far. But I've only driven on the highway with this full. It hasn't been in use offroad yet. I figure it's no worse than the hi-lift I have on the rail on the other side of the bed, granted that has two mounting brackets. But still.

How long are you talking? That crap ethanol goes bad a lot faster than plain gas. If the container is sitting exposed to the sun you are going to get more heating and cooling cycles which will not only cause it to vaporize more frequently (possible swelling of the container) but you will get more condensation inside the container. I've carried a mostly full NATO can in the back of my truck for a month at a time under a camper shell with no issues. A good NATO can will not leak and you won't smell anything; I was camping out of the back and just left the can secured in place.

Scepter cans are worth the money up front, even used ones. No rusting, denting & seal better than metal in my experience.
Don't bother pouring them. Grab a Super Siphon and save your back.
Previously I carried them in a Yakima basket, but just got this Baja Rack carrier and really like it. Works for my water cans too.

A gas can is already a bright red waving flag that screams "STEAL ME!!!"

Buy cheap gas cans at your hardware store or walmart when they're on sale. Spend the extra money on gas to put inside them.

Also if you're that worried you could cool up a 6' clear plastic hose and throw it behind the back seat in case you have to give a passerby 20 bucks to siphon off a few gallons. It's a cheap and easy backup plan. If that area you're going to is like the remote areas I drive through... when you run out of gas the nearest station is 1 hr away and closed for another 10 hrs. Sometimes your only opportunity for gas is another dude's tank.

gas odour you mean? Or plastic? I never store mine in the cab so I've never noticed a smell.
