Anyone know the exchange rate? I'm just curious what these cost. I can see 15-20k US dollars.

Wow. I checked out their website and I'm very impressed. By the time you factor in shipping and taxes it's nearly as much as replacing my truck and mods... I guess it's more comfortable to live in though

Bringing it to Jambo with me.

The AUD is currently only $0.74 to the USD. The rate at purchase time was a bit better.

Didn't even know I was as in the running.

There is a sizable discount for export as we don't have to pay the Commonwealth nation value added tax, or VAT.

We opted for the Platinum and added all the options to it short of the wood stove which now my wife wants. Go figure.

Oh yeah you were already in the running. You know with that awesome camper shell flippy over thingy. But now with the trailer too, you are just the flat out winner!

Ahh okay. I wasn't aware they were on a VAT system. The MSRP plus the sales tax I would pay when importing a platinum model is almost exactly what I have into my tacoma lol. Not sure what duties would be like... I assume made in AUS?

I'm not knocking the price.. I just think in terms of Tacomas. Definitely see what you're paying for and I'd rather have one of those than the 5th wheels that are around the same price point. Buuut, that level of camping trailer expenditure is pretty far beyond me at this point.

Yeah I get it. Being such a huge community here it's obvious that we are going to find people at all stages of life and budget. Subtracting the VAT knocked almost twenty grand off the top which certainly helped motivate me with the pricing.

I did the "rifle, rucksack, poncho" version long enough, which is why I bought the FlipPac. Once I lost 80% of the use of my left arm our family practically stopped going outside and I hate that, plus it's no way to raise a son so I found a solution that gets us back out and will also give a little something extra for Household 6 that I had been promising for years in the FlipPac.

Since we rarely wheel alone we subsequently rarely camp alone and now we have a base camp for our friends to use and the FlipPac becomes a mobile camp.

I see that many also confuse trail rigs into the mix often as well. I have a reasonably capable Tacoma and LandCruiser that with common sense do exceptionally well as trail rigs. But my goal isn't to win points in Some kind of expo bingo. I've always targeted being able to just go with my family and share what's outside with my son before it's too late. I just also happen to really like wheeling and being away from the bulk of the public.

Now I have a trailer that I feel comfortable taking with me that meets my families needs that also happens to be well tested on one of the harshest continents on the planet. I had allot of options to choose from but very few offered that provenance and came with such a reputation. And let's face it, I wouldn't have been able to hand build a "one-off" anywhere near the quality of this thing. I think with regular maintanence it will easily become part of my sons inheritance.

EAF and glamping should not be confused.

Modern American dictionaries define glamping as:

    1. Informal. the activity of camping with some of the comforts and luxuries of home: Imagine glamping in a carpeted tent with a comfy queen-size bed.

The British dictionary lists it as:

    1. a form of camping in which participants enjoy physical comforts associated with more luxurious types of holiday.

EAF is a particular look of an off-road vehicle, or perhaps the wardrobe choices of people operating said vehicles.

At least that's how I see it! :p

But, really, isn't what we do today what used to be called "car camping"?

That's what we call it in our family. But neither of us have a marketing degree so maybe we are missing some opportunities.

That's what I was brought up to it being called. We usually took the 4Runner out as far as we could then packed up and back packed about a mile in, that was camping prior to getting a truck and moving down here. Now camping is getting to a campsite and unpacking the truck and be ready to go

I very much agree, it's car camping with trucks. :D lol The dictionary I consulted noted that the word "glamping" first appeared circa 2000-2005. So, as far as the vernacular goes, it's a very new word!

EDIT: upon further reflection, I think the word "glamping" isn't widely known, or shared among most common folks. Perhaps only those that frequent off-road / camping forums. I think it may be strange to use it in speaking with "normal" folks. :notsure:

Exactly. A decade ago I would have cringed at the thought of my RTT with propane heater, camp stove, enough kitchen tools to cook a regular meal, etc. "Why would I spend thousands on that stuff and deal with packing it all when I can just grab my sleeping bag and a package of hotdogs/jerky!?" I'm sure one day I'll be more on your level, but I'm not there yet

That is a lot better than I would have expected. Still not cheap, but more on the level of US made "expo trailers".

This appeals to us too. Well, my girlfriend more so. I'm not convinced I want to tow a trailer at all, but she says she'll put it behind her FJ (which would be a little better on trails with its shorter wheelbase). It would be great to have a trailer to drop at base camp then go wheeling for the day for things like Rock Therapy. Her vote is the tie breaker so I am currently planning a (much simpler than yours) home made expo trailer. For completion by 2025 if we're lucky

Spot on. My Tacoma and gf's FJ are certainly not show vehicles even though I think they look good. The mods are definitely for getting away from it all and having a good time, not "expo bingo"
