Your transmission is also going through its learn procedure currently. Mine got horrid gas mileage and was all over the place during learn mode.

 

Typically dyno tests are full throttle against a load. I don't think ECT impacts full throttle. FWIW, I have almost 25K on my 2016 and I never noticed huge differences with ECT "on" in all kinds of driving situations. But after the TSB my throttle response and general transmission behavior at part throttle, i.e. normal driving (kickdown, torque converter unlock, shift points up and down, with and without CC) seem much better. But less than 1000 miles post-TSB and no high elevation or sustained, steep mountain freeway grades yet.

 

The ECM is as well. The short term and long term fuel trim tables need to be filled out by the ECM.

 

The point being, ECT does not unlock a new ECU tune / fuel map...

 

Ect is nothing new... my 91 pickup 22re had it.. all it does is delay the shift points so the Rpms are higher and you are in the power band a little longer

 

It is much more advanced than the ECT's used from 1984 to 2004. The old ECT barely did anything (it let the engine rev 500pm higher during part throttle acceleration).
The new ECT significantly livens up the electronic throttle, as well as the transmission.

I'm on board with you simply because I can be on the interstate in 6th gear, if I push the ECT button I immediately feel a power increase. Very noticeable as the truck pulls forward. And that's without the transmission doing anything.

 

Its pretty sad that as users we have to guess to what the ECT button is really doing, without toyota coming out and explaining it. That combined with the misinformation from guys who don't have a 3rd gen, the dealers, peanut gallery, etc...make it even more confusing.

I'm not an engineer but I do own a 2016. I can confidently say that the button does more than just change the shift points on the transmission or adjusts the throttle sensitivity. You can feel the pedal change when you are driving along and press the button. Whether that is adding more fuel, changing the mapping, working the hamsters harder or ????? its doing more than what others are suggesting.

 

If you feel the pedal change, it's most likely adjustment of the pedal sensitivity.

The ECU filters and scales the throttle position input signal to determine how far to open the actual throttle. If the throttle pedal subjectively feels different, that's a good sign that the throttle curves are being adjusted.

Toyota also hasn't been secret about the fact that they filter the throttle pedal signal. They acknowledge slowing throttle input response in their 2GR-FKS documents. I think it's a safe bet that ECT mode changes the throttle curves. Many vehicles have similar buttons these days.

A combination of altered throttle sensitivity and altered shift algorithms would explain everything the ECT button does. The same amount of power is always on tap whether the button is pressed or not, but the ECU is still responsible for translating your throttle pedal inputs in to how much of that power to apply and what gear to stay in. The engine doesn't have less power with ECT off, but it requires more throttle input before it gives you that power. That's just the nature of throttle pedal input curves.

I believe the engine control strategy remains in Otto cycle as well, which would yield more torque per stroke, due to higher dynamic compression/cylinder pressures than Atkinson cycle.

I have read this , I have read most of this thread also. I have not found an answer to this - . Does anyone know for sure if using ETC. All THE TIME causes any harm to the trans/engine combo ? I realize it may affect the MPG but this is not a concern.
Also would using the S mode of shifting ALL THE TIME with or without ETC cause any harm to the Trans / engine combo ? I realize it may affect the MPG but this is not a concern.
Would using the S mode as a manual shifter to shift when I want thru the gears cause any harm to the trans / engine combo?
The reason I as is I have a Chevy Equinox that has a manual shifting mode also. The manual states not to use it a manual shifter !! The explanation of the ETC, in the above link only mentions using ETC for short bursts .
Has anyone talked to a Toyota engineer and asked these ?'s and got a concrete answer ?

I think you would see a different torque and HP curve.

 

FWIW, the Lexus guys get better runs without ECT.
