Installed 4.88 Gears in my 2016

BTW, I talked to Nitro today and had a few questions.
I asked why the didn't go 5.13s. He said, it would be 5.29s and there is not enough room in the front carrier to make gears that big. I said, I think those would be perfect if you could fit them in there. He agreed. Lol

It is awesome to have the added power / torque.

 

Agreed. I have the exact same truck as you and I need the 4.56

 

Seriously doubt you would even notice the difference between those two.
Btw it's not gonna happen.

 

I think 4.88 would be perfect for a manual on 285's. I just want reverse to be lower honestly, I'll never know why they've always chose a tall reverse on Tacoma manuals. Anyone calculate what rpms the manual would be at 70 with 4.88s?

So i just checked grimmjeeper.com/gears for my setup at 75mph with 285/70r17s

It shows:
2352rpms with 4.30s
2669rpms with 4.88s

If that's the case I will be completely satisfied with the outcome of 4.88s.

 

1600 to 2050 rpms at 65.
3.90to 4.88s in 6th gear.
Those are not exact numbers but pretty close.
Around town I'm still at 1600 rpm's at 40.
Its an auto.

 

thanks - i just don't think these trucks have enough torque low enough to pull 1600 RPM at 65 with any kind of grade or headwind. sounds like your are pretty happy. guessing off the line is much improved.

 

Yes, much happier. I am finally starting to feel like I don't want to drive the truck off a cliff.
Maybe I can start to enjoy it now.

 

I can't possibly see how this calculator can work, considering it does not take into account the transmission gearing. It has to assume your are in a 1:1 gearing and not in overdrive.

 

Does this calibrator allow you to input tire diameter and gear ratio?

I'm curious what tires size/gear ratio you are running and how far off your speedo was before the calibration. If the larger tires make the speedo read low, but the gear makes them read high, just wondering how their offset from each other affected the final speed inaccuracy.

 

Yes you can input both. I check the accuracy of the speedo with a few different GPS units and programs to verify and get the ratio correct. Im very picky and cant have speed off for more than 2 mph. If you seen my trucks and the work I do you would understand. I calibrated the speedo the second day I owned the truck cause a hr after I drove off the lot it had 6112s on the front 5160 in rear and new wheels and tires 285 70 17. So first thing I did was lift and wheels and tires then I added the calibrator cause I new the speed was off. then I did exhaust and intake and had been waiting for gears since befor I bought the truck. Once gears were available i did those. and re-calibrated it after the gears again. @DigitalSensei

.58 Transmission gear ratio (6th gear in an auto with the V6)
285's Tires (32.8")
4.88 Diff Gears

2000RPM = 69.4 MPH

6 speed manual with .71 ratio 6th gear
2000RPM = 60MPH

Funny that I considered 4.88s "crawling" gears in my '82 short bed SR5 5spd with a 22R and 33x12.5s. It would keep up with traffic no problem.

Saw to many 5.29 gear sets break to bother going any lower than 4.88. Less tooth contact and smaller pinion = kaboom.

 

Not bad. Though this is why I like Jeeps. $600 for cryo'd 4:88's and everyone wants over $1000 for Toyota...

 

I paid 627 for my 4.88 gear set with mini install kits.

 

hi guys would this ratio of 4.88 also be good in my 2.7 auto 4x4 planning on 285 /75 /16 a lot of hills everywere I go any input greatly appreciated thanks in advance

 

You're going to need all the help you can get with a 2.7 and a 33" tire. 4.88 should help but I think you'll still be down shifting quite a bit.

 

Drove my 4:88's for the first time today. Put about 80 miles total all hilly back country roads in NJ, gotta admit so far I'm really liking the regear. The hunting is definitely reduced and drives much like what I expected the truck should drive off the lot. The most noticeable difference was uphill, much improved in my opinion. Lets see how I feel in another 1000 miles but its looking good. I do have a whine on deceleration but its minimal and nothing I can't live with, for the most part my radio is loud enough I don't hear anything anyway
