Is this recall worth it for me? I'm not going crazy wheeling it and the only time I move significant weight is maybe once or twice a year. I never got the harsh ride upgrade, so I just have the original springs with the Toytec AAL I put in in 2009ish. What is odd looking at post 1893 above is I'm currently at 24" center of wheel to fender with just the AAL.

I just found out about this recall last week. I never received a letter, but after talking with the dealer my truck is affected. Debating whether or not to get it done as it will likely be nose high until I get an AAL back in. Seems a hassle for a debatable "gain".

Since the recall is for preventing the springs from breaking ad puncturing the fuel tank, I would do it. Its really got nothing to do with wheeling or not.

The wheeling reference was simply to establish that I'm not beating on the truck too much. Acknowledge the recommendation. Thanks.

Just had the recall spring kit installed on a 2009 double cab. Early impressions are that it raised the ride height a little bit in back, even with my 250 lb shell. Driving over larger bumps, the rear is less likely to bottom. On smaller bumps and broken pavement, it floats more over things that would cause a thud with the original rear suspension. In short, there's both more wheel travel and a slightly more flexible feel, which is what I would expect going from 3 leaves to 4. The only adverse effect I've noticed is a slightly greater tendency to rock from side to side on boulevards at about 45 mph, when the pavement is uneven. This is not bothersome. During the swap, which took about 3 hours, the dealer gave me a 2017 loaner. I looked closely at the springs on that, and it appears to me that the recall pack is quite similar to the design on the new Tacomas. BTW, I liked the drivetrain on the 2017. The engine is quite a bit smoother at idle, and the gearing is taller on the freeway. Mileage should be quite good if carefully driven. Sound proofing is better. Tranny is programmed for good mileage, which makes it slightly reluctant to downshift, but I prefer that. Handbrake in place of the foot brake -- an improvement in my view since I have inadvertently stomped on or gotten wedged under the foot brake when wearing boots. Audio screen is better and visible with sunglasses on. Overall, a minor improvement.

Overall, I'm satisfied with mine. I pretty much agree with your synopsis except my truck rocks less on turns now. I also have a camper around 220 lbs on the back. Check your torque on the U-bolts. Mine were not tight enough. I put them at 75lbs and the truck is pretty smooth now.

My results were about the same as you. No rocking in the turns at all, one of the highway interchanges on my daily commute is a sweeping left that was comfortable at 50 before the recall work, but you started to feel it. This morning, felt as smooth and stable in that corner as it did on the 6 mile straight shot before it. I get a lot less rattle on badly paved roads then I used to however im pretty sure I still have original factory billsteins installed... (5100 on the list)

I have my truck at the Toyota Dealership now and even though I have the TSB Springs, they are insisting upon telling me that they have to put the U.S. spec springs on and NOT the TSB replacement springs. I brought in the technical instructions for the safety recall that states that the different springs should be put on since it has had the safety recall, but they are still arguing with me. The Director of the Service department is supposed to call me back.

Update: So the Dealership didn't call me back after an hour so I called them. They again proceeded to tell me that even though I had the TSB springs physically on my truck (that is how I bought the truck) they wouldn't install the correct 34404 springs because they couldn't find in their computers that the TSB had been done and they were afraid they wouldn't get paid by Toyota.

I called Toyota directly and told them all of the details. First they said that the dealership is able to contact the warranty hotline directly to make sure that they would get paid. When I said that the dealership has had my truck for nearly four hours now and they haven't done anything yet, they put me on hold to call the dealership directly themselves. After waiting for about 15 minutes on hold, Toyota told me that it has been approved and that the dealership would be installing the correct leaf springs and they gave me a case number.

So, now I have to wait a few weeks to actually get it done because the parts are "Special order." The mot frustrating part of all of this is that when I dropped off the truck, I asked the service advisor, literally, five times to check to see if the parts are even at the dealership because I don't want to wait all day just to find out that they have to order the parts. He refused to check and now I wait.

The most frustrating part for me is the fact that my family owned a dealership for two generations and I know how a we treated customers. I was always offended by the term "Stealership" and frustrated by the negative reactions people had to dealerships because we never treated customers that way. It wasn't until I moved out of my home state and my family sold their dealership and I started having to deal with dealerships other than my families that I realized how appropriate the term "stealership" actually is in some cases. I imagine I must now frustrate some of these dealerships because I know how things are actually supposed to work and I won't take their b.s.

and you have every right to frustrate them. it wouldn't get to that stage if they would just listen, actually look into the customer's request, not lie about things and actually care about the customer.

I was on the list for about a week here in Ky but i kept calling and pestering them to lock down a time, verify that an alignment WOULD be completed after the work per the recall manual and a few other things. after about 3 days of intentional pestering they suddenly had a few sets in stock. Apparently the customers had not contacted them to reschedule so i got bumped up to next in line.

Bottom line, they fed me the same crap until they just wanted me gone and magically they had 6 unclaimed sets... Just dont listen to them when they find something wrong while doing the work. My brakes were supposed to fail within two weeks the recall work. Took it to my guy who laughed and said come back in the spring and maybe they will need to be replaced.

Sooooo... when my front suspension was redone (long story, lots of $$$) my mechanic installed a ToyTech 3" lift as well. I'm taking the truck back to him in a little bit today to have him tighten the U bolts on the leaf springs... which are the original OEM springs that are part of this recall.

If he did some work to compensate for the lift on the springs, will Toyota still do a replacement or refuse because they have been "modified"?

I also am up for the recall on the Spiral Cable/Clockspring assembly so I may take it to a dealership anyways to see what they say about the leaf springs regardless.

I have the Tec printout. just need some photos of the springs. Can never be to over prepared at the dealership.

    Thanks for any ones help.

Took my truck in today for a normal service and wanted to talk to them about getting the recall done. I had to drop it off before work and specifically said to let me know what they were going to do about my AAL when doing the swap. If they would be allowed to re-install the icon set up on the new leafs, we would make an apointment to do so another day.

Sure enough, end of the day comes around and they say it's all done. I grab the truck and park back at work and notice its sitting extremely low in the rear. Low enough where my tires look like they'd rub over a speed bump. Called up and said first off, hunt down my old pack and set them aside since my 200+$ AAL kit was obviously still on there. Now I wait for a call tomorrow morning with his solution to them removing my lift without my okay and having a significantly lower rear end.

They either need to re-install the old pack entirely or install the AAL on the new pack for me. Called icon to just pick their brain and it sounds like one of the new shackles is in the way of the AAL. I'm sure Toyota would be against removing one of those and sending me one my way too. So frustrating. On top of that, they charged my debit card 3 times for the regular service I was in there for originally.

I don't have a photo of the difference, but I'll get one tomorrow morning to show how much it sagged down.
