can you transfer old tires to new rims?

i was thinking about getting some after market wheels but i want to keep the tires i have now, i was just wondering if a tire place could simply transfer your current tires to the new rim since i plan to stay at 16in and my tires are great in the snow

also i don't understand what the back spacing or offset measurements mean?

 

so i would have to get seperate wheel spacers as well?

 

you shouldn't as long as you stay with in the same rim size and tire size

 

i have 265/70 r16 tires on the stock rims right now and i plan to keep the tires just transfer them to a 16in aftermarket rim which i understand now should be a problem but i still don't understand what the backspacing and offset measurements mean or if i would have to get anything else to make the rim fit on the truck...

 

What brand/model of tire is it? What is the width of your new rim? If you have this info, check the tire specs at www.tirerack.com. Look for 265/70/16 row and the column RIM WIDTH RANGE. If the width falls within that range, then you can use that rim.

As for the backspacing or offset, that's a different question. If you want your tire to stick out a little bit, get a lower backspacing than your stock rim. But, you will have the risk of rubbing to the wheel wells when turning. Small lift or trimming will solve it.

Search the internet. There are tons of information about backspacing and offset. Or you post the rim that you are eyeing for, so people can reply whether they will fit or not, or what modification that's needed.

 

i am thinking of going with the pro comp 7089 16in. Not sure if i would need a hub centric ones or not though. and thanks for clearing up the back spacing question

 

and you can get the rim in either 8 or 10in width so i would have to go with the 8in. Its all coming together now haha

also i have the billy's in front set at 2.5in so would i even have to worry about rubbing with a little more backspacing?

There shouldn't be. I suggest that you stay no less than 4.5" backspacing.

Most are running 16x8 4.5" backspacing or 0 offset.

 

so would that make my tires stick out a little more than stock? i like that look but only to a certain degree

Some are running 4" BS. I suggest that you go the build section to look at the rigs or do some search. Or create another thread asking for pictures of 1st gen with 2.5" lift and stock tires. Ask them to include the wheel size and BS. Good luck.

 

Whenever you get ready to switch wheels, make SURE the tire shop uses bead lube when they dismount the tires and also when they remount the tires. If they don't use bead lube they could damage the bead of the tire and then it's no good, and of course you wouldn't know until you have a tire failure. Manufacturer's warranties do not cover demount/mount damage. I see this way too often in the tire industry.

 

Yeah they can but they will charge you to take the tire off and then put it back on. I thought about doing this but then I just decided to wait till I get the tires and wheels.
