That looks just like my truck, aside from the powder coated wheels. Same model too. Congrats

While 4x4 will help you to get going, you will still want to be able to stop when you need it. 4x4 will have absolutely no impact on your stopping abilities. And ditches are often filled with 4x4s driven there by people forgetting about that.

So it is a big YES - you do want to have either winter tires or chains, even with 4x4.

I've owned a 2wd ford, here is my advice.
If you plan on offloading, or you get a lot of bad weather in your area, get four wheel drive.
2wd is ok, and can do the job, but in bad weather or offroad you will wish you had 4wd.

I suggest 4wd, you will end up wishing you had it.

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Plus, tacomas 4wd high and low are awesome. 4wd low in a tacoma will get you anywhere, and out of anything.

I remember once I was driving in the desert, and accidentally ended up in 2ft of mud, came to a complete stop, popped in in 4,wheel low, and got right out.

It's worth the extra $, gas mileage will depend more on if you drive with a heavy foot or not.

I would just get the 4x4 because the resale is fast if the truck is in good shape and you get a good return on your investment. More people want a 4x4 than a 2x2.

When I put my 98 Tacoma 4x4 on Craig's list , I had 14 responses the first day, and the first person that came and looked at it bought it.

4x4 makes a negligible difference in mileage.

Should get about 1 to 2 MPG better with a Pre-Runner. Pre-Runner should be a little quicker and a 4WD unit. (less weight)
Maintenance a little more costly. All of these considerations are minor. Ask yourself, do you really need 4WD? Probably not.
But if you need it Get It.

I would never buy a 4x2 truck. Driving up to the mountains to ski and not having to chain up is worth the minor extra money for a 4x4. But it really depends where you live and what you do with the truck.
