4th fuel pump fail

Hi there I have a 2010 doublecab v6 six speed with about 291000k on it
The check engine light came on the other day and it is a lean misfire code
Everytime this code has came up it has been a fuel pump issue including the original pump this is the 4th one to fail
This last one went for less the 30000kms
Any ideas what is killing them?
I made sure to always gas up before the light came on with this pump
And still fail
The fuel tank looks perfectly clean inside

 

Minor detail but do you let the pump turn off before starting the truck? You can hear it run for 5-10 seconds then turn off.

 

Clogged fuel lines or filter in the tank causing the pump to work too hard?

 

Do you keep replacing the fuel pump with an OEM one?

Have you swapped out the fuel filter, not the sock, ever?

 

What is the code? Who is replacing the pump? And as Torspd asked, if you are not using oem, then go that route. I have had many vatozone and napa pumps fail on my older tacos and 4runners, going back to oem and no issues again.

 

do you let your tank run all the way down, do you always fill at the same place?

 

?? 2nd gens have a filter other than the sock??

 

Just out of curiosity do you have any symptoms other than a light popping on?

 

You ever check fuel pressure? That would tell you if it's the pump or something else.

Why wasn't this the first thing asked/addressed?

 

Yes. Sock, pump, then the filter surrounds the pump. It is fairly large. Compared to the size of the pump. Doesn't mean it won't get all clogged up, and cause undue stress on the pump though.

This is why I am such a vocal advocate for telling people to upgrade the oem pump to one from URD. since it move the filter externally, and gives you a larger/better pump.

 

Unless they changed something since 2006. Mine was a bare pump, with the sock hanging off the bottom laying flat along the bottom of the tank. I also recommend and replaced mine with a URD pump!

 

Nope. It is there. It just blends in with the housing. The pump plugs directly into the filter, then the corrugated fuel feed line comes out of the filter.

I should have a picture of it in the URD fuel pump installation manual, at home. See if I can find a picture of it which can be cross referenced from the one on Google.

Mine is a 2006 as well.

 

Here we are. The filter is in the first picture, on the right. It completely engulfs the pump.

The fuel pump sock is in the second picture.

 

How long between pump failures? You sure it's not something else that's intermittent and you just keep clearing the codes, changing the pump, then a little while later the code comes back because the real problem wasn't fixed?

 

I replaced mine with an Denso brand from Rockauto never had a problem

 

You have a code - is there any driveability issues or does it run fine otherwise?

 

Heard their might be a bad wiring harness or issues.Dealer replaced mine with a new harness.Check your connections from end to end.Mine was with new frame etc...let us know what the harness,connectors look like.good luck.
