Diff breather mods question.

Is the new breather that is used on the diff supposed to work both ways.
Let air in and out?

Got the parts today. Just want to be sure I got the right ones.

 

I believe that it only lets air out.

A proper diff breather will let both air in and out.

If this were the case, it would create negative pressure in the differential and try to pull air/water in through the axle seals defeating the purpose of the breather.

The new diff breather will allow air in and out. the reason for the one way nature of the stock breather is to not allow water in at its low mounting point on the axle. Problem with this is water still gets in when a hot axle is dunked under water through the seals. The breather extension allows on to run a two way breather thus avoiding any water getting sucked in via the seals

 

OEM from the factory breather is a one way, out, breather. the replacement part suggested in the diff breather relocate is 2 way.

 

I just remember reading somewhere on here that the diff mod isn't the best solution, and the best is just a little filter like this otherwise you can still fuck up your axle seals when running a hot diff through cold water.


The one that replaces it is the same as the OEM one just with a nipple on it so it can be extended via hose.

 

Put your mouth on the tip and blow and suck to see if it goes both ways.

No, the suggested part # is indeed a two way breather.

 

That would keep dirt etc from getting in the diff oil, but I don't believe it would keep water out for a second. No matter what it's a very stressful thing to put a hot sealed object into a cold environment. The point of the diff breather is to allow an equalization of pressure so as to not suck water into the diff, be it through the breather or the seals.

 

The way I see it is you put the nipple in place of the original breather and extend it with a hose. You could leave the end of the hose open if you wish, or a filter on the end for dust etc.

Any off road vehicle I've ever owned (side by side, atv) all have a hose coming off the differentials routed up high open ended.

 

I put a few droppersfull of lube into the fuel line I used to relocate, to catch any dust that might intrude thru the 2 way breather

 

I used a small piece of sponge for my filter, just shove it into the end of the tube. Had the sponge . . . . so filter portion of the mod was free.

You have the right parts then. I have the same and it has been put to the test more than a few times.

 

If you had replaced the stock breather with this, with the amount of crap hitting that area underneath. Would have maybe caused it to fail.

I've done the breather re locate on mine, had the two way breather from toyota but now have swapped it out for a filter similiar to the one you've posted. I re located mine to one of the bin boxes where I already wired up a 12v outlet, So losing a bin wasn't a big deal. Plus its a little cleaner environment than behind the tail light. Especially since I spray that area and the truck with oil every year for salt protection
