Best place to start? Went to start the vehicle this evening approx 7pm. 2001 Toyota Tacoma 4 Cyl. 2.7 Auto. Engine initially fired roughly a few times, but did not start? Made a couple of further attempts to start but resulted in engine turning over but no attempt to fire or start? It has been setting now for about 4 hours. Added some fuel injector cleaner and will attempt to start in the AM. Its been pretty rainy the last couple of days but usually I can count on the Tacoma to startup. Thank you for your assistance with this matter. TC

basics...check for spark, if you have spark (which it sounds like you had some kind of spark)check for fuel. if you have both spark and fuel then it gets more difficult--cam sensor, timing etc..If it wasnt turning over I'd say it was the battery. there really are a number of things it could be. Just start checking the list off.

Sounds like a mass air flow censor.

Appreciate the reply. Went out in the AM and engine started & seemed to run satisfactorily. Had to make a trip to Walmart for groceries, in evening, round trip of 20 miles after filling up with premium gasoline. 8 gallons & first time this taco got to taste premium. For now things are normal but will see if this problem recurs. Thank you for taking the time to input. SP

Check engine light is always on. Replaced the EGR as per code but haven't done anything with the temp sensor as per suggested by one of the forum members. I know it wasn't the EGR, as the code was removed, but vehicle runs satisfactorily so I haven't pursued this any further. Cursed enough when I replaced the EGR valve so be it for now. Perhaps I should check the codes again and remove them. It seems to comes back to that area. Thanks for your input! SP
