That is what I did also. I was looking at best a Trek 3900 in my price range. I found a Trek 6000 in Dallas for $575 not a great deal, but it was well within my price range. I am addicted already I just ordered a new 2010 FuelEx 8 saturday.

I've got a 1996 Giant ATX 870. It has about 12,000 km on it so I reccomend Giants. I've put loads of upgardes on it over the years and it's still taking a pounding, but I'm going to be shopping for an upgade soon too.

The only original parts are the frame, hubs & rims. Every year I'd tear it all down, repack the bearings ect. and put it back together. When I found a new aftermarket part I liked I'd replace something. The thing is still in mint condition, and I have it down to 22 lbs.
The only problem is it's a 21 speed. 27 speeds seem like the standard these days, and that's impossibe to change if I want to keep the old frame.

Toytec ultimate lift kit, light racing UCAs, ARB bumper and full skid plates underneath. Looking into redoing the suspension and maybe repainting the ol' Taco.
I've switched mine to a 1x9 setup. I really like the more simplistic set, and there is no more front deraileur to bind up. Not to mention the shorter rear cage deraileur means a tighter chain and no more chain slap.

Congrats! you'll love the ex8. I had a 2009 ex8 and loved it. Just sold it and bought a 2009 Giant Anthem x2 with Mavic SLR's to race.

I'm just getting into this and I don't want to spend a lot of money on my first bike.

I'm thinking about buying this bike.

    http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/bik/1577961593.html

newb question: Is the rust on the chain possibly an indicator of over problems or is it not a big deal at all??

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated?

That could mean a couple things, obviously it was dealing with water, possibly not lubed well. If everything checks out fine, and its just a chain I dont think it would be a big deal to replace it but I personally might be cautious.

You must replace the chain with the rear cog set. The chain and rear gears wear together, just a heads up. A rusty chain could just mean that they didn't lube it often enough, or that the bike has been left out in the weather. I would have it checked out by a bike mechanic if you don't know what your looking for.

If it is just some surface rust(if the chain still runs smoothly) then just oil up the chain and enjoy it.

I agree that bike probably just hasn't seen much oil on the chain for some time. And is just in need a little TLC. However I have always been taught to replace the chain with the cassette because they wear together, if the chain is worn ie. stretched then it has worn the cassette to match. If you just replace the chain and not the cassette it will wear the new chain out much faster then it should. Thats what my bike mechanic says anyway, and he's been doing it for 20+ years!

My dad found a KHM along side the road and gave it to me. Needs new brakes and lines, new shifters, and probably a new front rim. He thought it was a K-Mart special until he googled it. I don't know enough about mountain bikes to begin with, but want to restore it. Frame and forks are in great condition though.
