I need some knowledge and don't have very good internet.

Are there any special tools needed for swapping a steering rack, I hear that the hardline can be difficult to disconnect. Is there a special wrench to use on it to make it easier.

I am on deployment and need to have everything waiting so I can fix it and drive across country.

    thanks

@4Running Daily is a professional at that. From what I remember when I did mine I didn't use anything other than the standard tools. Some people use a crow foot wrench on the hard lines but I was able to get mine off with a standard one.

Also make sure you have something to remove the tie rods, they can get frozen together.

thanks guys. I am doing the whole thing so new rack and inner and outers, from Toyota the rack comes with inners.

I have done the tie rods before and the lbjs as well as change the bushings on the rack.

my rack has been leaking and my inners have been loose for a while so I figure its a good time to refresh it all before I drive from ca to va with the trailer

I don't think any special wrenches were required but wear your mechanics gloves as removing the hard lines are a definite knuckle buster.

The hardlines are the worst part. I'm considering putting some quick disconnects there because I swap racks so often. I'm looking into alternative solution currently, but for now, free replacement on Autozone racks will do along with Lifetime Alignment at Firestone

That's my plan as well this winter. Hopefully it will make driving it so much better when done.

The only thing I can suggest is using a flare nut wrench. I can't remember the size right off the top of my head, but I remember they help a lot.
