Have you picked up any improvement in fuel mileage (mpg) from installing one of these on the 3.5 engine? I have used cold air intakes on previous vehicles and generally pick up 1 mpg or slightly better (I know there can be slight performance gains, but I have my sports car if I want all out performance). Any input is appreciated .

I have my figures graphs and values for the trd CAi but they're all in Japanese, not sure if that's any use to you. I'll post them if you want them.

If you believe you gained 1 mpg previously you will believe you gained 1mpg with this.

In reality you haven't gained any mpg with an intake.

    know what ?

this type of engine benefits from a cold air intake

if yours doesn't look like this with air intake on top of engine,
then you already have a cold air intake in the fender.

From what I've read online, an intake won't really do much to a car. It's only beneficial if you tune the car to maximize the potential of the parts you installed. Otherwise it won't really make a difference. I could be wrong though.

I installed a K&N filter only in the 2015 4 runner I had, and gained 2.2 mpg per the computer. Went from 16.4 to 18.6...the average about 500 miles after the swap.

One or two tanks doesn't have any meaning.

It's hard to follow, they don't rely on traditional red/blue line delineation.

It stayed between 18.5 and 18.6 for the next ~6,000 miles until I traded it in. Best I averaged for the first 10,000 miles or so with the oem filter was 16.7.

Yes, but as you can see, there is no color to the lines. One cannot just make assumptions.

Appreciate the replies so far. Like I mentioned, the potential fuel economy gain is most what I would be after (Any performance gains would just be a plus. (I understand some people think there is none to be had, but I have done it with plenty of other vehicles). The TRD cold air intake seems like not many have tried it yet as it looks like it was just recently made available. Any other input is appreciated.

Not too sure, have not had a chance to put too many miles on to notice any difference yet. Usually on most of my previous cars I have installed intake/exhaust combo and have had worse milage because of the sound difference those mods tend to make my foot heavier...hehehe. TRD exhaust has just been ordered btw.

You will see the biggest increase in fuel economy if you add a hood scoop. Maybe a spoiler too.

I thought the bed without tonneau cover creates more rear downforce  no wing needed...hehehe.

I know there has to be more people out there running these cold air intakes. I think the TRD would maybe be better as it draws air from the fender area. The K&N design makes me wonder if you would pull in more air from the engine compartment.
