OK, so i bought a new Tacoma, right?

It's a 4wd Offroad with the sunroof and the stereo package. Nothing special about it.

I called up the insurance company and added it to my insurance.

Then, when the bill came in...

It seems that this Tacoma is in some sort of high cost group or something. My insurance went WAY up.

I had a 2001 and a 2005 Tacoma before and this has never been an issue, but it looks like they want 300 a month to cover this thing!

What about you guys? Are the insurance companies gouging you or is this special just for me?

Mine is a 2wd sport and it was about the same as my 2013 F150 Ecoboost which is 4wd. I expected to pay a little less but didn't work out that way.

    Wow, can't imagine why.

When I got my Tacoma, I was 22 and even then it was only $1400/year. I think I'm somewhere between $1200 and $1300 now.

Every insurance carrier quoted me at least $50-$60 a month higher for my 3rd Gen than when I had my 2008 S2000, and kids are wrapping them around trees like Christmas lights.

No one here can answer your question accurately without:

    How's your driving history?
    What coverage did you get?
In what kind of area do you live?
How many miles do you drive a year?
    What deductibles do you have?
How many drivers are on the policyear?
What age bracket are you in?

I'm under $100 a month. clean history, 100/300/100. $500 ded collision. $50 comp. I drive 12k a year, low crime area. 2 drivers on policy. 25-35 age bracket. Low cost car to insure in my experience, $15 more per month than my 2012 FJ was for same coverage.

    2017 TRD OR DCSB.

Does your insurance company not give you online/over the phone quotes? Give Geico or Progressive a shot and ask them what discounts you may qualify for. might be able to save some money that way.

There are significantly more factors than just the vehicle that play into insurance costs such as coverage, deductible, driving record, storage, and discounts. So everyone who posts here on what they are paying will vary greatly.

That being said, based on my coverage (300/500/100) selections and $200 deductible my Tacoma insurance is about $75 a month which is only $15 more than our 2012 Subaru with 100k miles on it..My 1988 Wrangler only costs $20 a month.

I pay 2k a year for my Taco and I am 23. Never gotten a ticket or been at fault for an accident. Live in washington state. Kind of insane.

Wow. That sounds steep, and I'd have figured TX to be cheaper than NY to insure. I carry my '16 TRDOR and my wife's '15 Yukon XL, full coverage, for $129/mo.

I'm under $100/mo for the Tacoma and my '95 Ford. I have full coverage on the Taco and liability only on the Ford.

Shop around. Looks like you might be eligible for USAA. I'd try them first.

I'm an insurance underwriter for a major insurance company.

There is a lot that goes into an insurance rate other than the vehicle. Driving record, age, sex, marital status, other policies in force, credit rating, just to name a few. Since none of those changed for you most likely, it would seem that your insurance company had a loss ratio problem with 3rd generation Tacomas and is placing the rate where they think they have to to turn a small profit. Keep in mind that insurance companies only intend to do slightly better than break even. Almost all of their actual profit comes from investing your money not just the difference between premiums collected and losses paid.

The policy you buy and the company you buy it from is a choice. They don't have you by the balls. If you don't think the rate is fair, take your business elsewhere.

When I upgraded from my 2004 4Runner to my 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road my premium only went up by about $40 every 6 months.

Mine went from $720 to $840 a year, compared to my '07; same coverage.

Credit rating is a real biggie. Wife's TRD pro 4runner was a little cheaper than her lexus

Just got off the phone with my insurance agent. I think he said premium increased ~$20/mo over my 2002 Tacoma. That seems crazy low.

I pay around $1000 a year for my Tacoma. It went down about $400 a year when I bought it and got rid of my 2013 IS250.

Seriously shop around. I just got a 2012 trd sport and it was cheaper then my 2013 civic coupe I had prior. I have my truck and a 2008 Scion xB on my policy for $150 a month with Usaa and I've shopped around and they can't be beat. That's actually a lot since I moved to the next town over and it jumped $10 a month. Granted there are mileage factors and the place you live they take into account as well plus your driving record.

My wife and I have our 16' Explorer and my 17' TRDOR 4x4 with GEICO. $500 deductibles. About $90 a month total. We're in our late 20's with nothing on our driving history within 7 years and live in an apartment. Went down a few dollars a month from my 14' Ford Fiesta ST.
