My new 2017 Access cab 4 cylindar

Wish it was 306hp rating though...

 

Makes me think the power of these trucks are governed quite a bit. Like a 4.0 in a 4runner has more hp then one in a tacoma..

 

I'd love to see a dyno (specifically low rpm torque) of a 2016+ 2.7L w/ dual variable valve timing.
I might have to book a few runs at the local shop some weekend...

 

I think the reason they detune these engines quite a bit is for longevity and reliability. Toyota has been known to be more conservative in their approach.

 

The 4.0 in the Tacoma is different than in the 4Runner.

Single VS Dual VVT-I.

 

I haven't had a single problem with my 3.5L.

 

Same engine, different vale train.

If someone can't decide on the 4 or 6 cylinder engine, it pains me that they wouldn't just test drive both....

It seems as though the Access Cab is hard to find I.don't see many on the road where I live.I wonder what the Production numbers are for the Acess cab

 

I want to address the people complaining about the 2.7 being slow.

Personally speaking, I'm a speed addict. Lots of HPDE days, autocrosses, formula racing schools, etc. I bought a 2.7L 5Spd 4x4 (with 255/75-17 AT tires), in part, to slow down my road habits.

Well, kinda. I have 13,000 miles on it now. And in that time, I'm going faster than the flow of traffic 95% of the time. I'm constantly flashing people who clog the passing lane. I literally just barreled around 695 today with a Dodge Challenger and a BMW X6 through traffic for 15mins today around 75-90mph. The truck did it easily. Rarely, and I mean rarely, do I need to pull aside because someones faster than me or on my ass. I pass everything from Ferraris to gt3s. And why you might ask? How is this possible?! BECAUSE THERE ARE SPEED LAWS THAT PEOPLE ARE MENTALLY WIRED TO. You're big bad 278hp v6 is capped to 55 or 60 just like all the 2.7Ls out there. Speed is not something you just buy. Speed is a part of who you are. It's a conscious decision to want speed more than legal protection, sometime safety. It's something that's inside you. If you want to go fast, you'll end up going fast. In anything. This alphamale v6 posturing is hollow. Yes, the engine has more power, but that doesn't mean you're faster. That doesn't mean you're better. It's just a different motor. The one thing you have over us 2.7'ers is towing capability. If you're an average or sheepish person, you'll be going slow or average no matter what you buy. If you're someone who's concerned or motivated by the speed of your vehicle, you'll go fast no matter what you buy. Why on earth any Tacoma owner is worried about not being able to go fast enough is beyond me. You bough a pickup truck to go fast? Huh? Mind you - in the human history of motored vehicles - it hasn't been until the last 25% that we've been spoiled with numbers like 160hp and 278hp in a truck. This uber-reliable, efficient, and strong 2.7L in any other part of world history would be UNGODLY good. Our grandparent's generation was way tougher, way rougher, and they did wayyyy more with their hands... And their pickup trucks had 80hp if they were lucky... This society is so consumed with purchasing the biggest and fastest, with astronomical power stats, all while the operator is getting weaker and lazier. I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad.

 

You missed something critical in your rant. You mistakenly confused peoples ultimate desire for acceleration as a desire for speed. The two are not linked for most people.

 

Same theory applied. I can go on and on and on, but I had to stop somewhere.

 

Sorry you got a shitty V6. Luckily those Texas put a V6 in my SR5 that is smooth running, smooth sounding, refined, and with guts in my 3d gen.

Nah. The 3.5L V6 needs to rev. Once you got it spinning its pretty quick. In addition there is an ECT switch that allows for higher rev shifting.
I don't think the engine is rough and I find it smooth. I don't deny that under the right condition it hunts for gears. But that should have been resolved under a TSB
I have no clue about the 4 banger. But if possible I'd test the two and than make the choice. The mpg is pretty similar between the two I believe.

 

Well, I have had this for a week and I am quite happy with it. Going from the Frontier with it's poor turning radius and stiff steering (in my opinion) the Tacoma is a delight - to my gimpy shoulders. The one thing the 4 cylinder obviously lacks is power compared to the V6, but I can live with that. The Tacoma is much quieter as well. The dual climate control was a bit overkill and I never understood why Nissan put it in the Frontier. I added 3 inch chrome nerf bars to aid in my wife's climbing into the cab. $176 delivered VS $625 from the dealer. Soon I will get the tonneau cover.

 

I switched over from Nissan and vow to never go back! As far as the 2.7L goes I think it has enough power just as long as you don't plan on towing a lot. I myself don't do much at all so I opted for the smaller engine. Plus if you want power, just floor it at around 4-5k RPM in 2nd n youll be hitting 60mph in no time. These toyota motors are built like a beast!
