The biggest douche ever right there. That turd is far more concerned of his loss of property THAN the lives that were lost.

    Un-be-fucking-lievable. :der:

The artist community is pretty upset with the owner. Hope he has some severe consequences.

Not to sound like a heartless asshole, but not all the blame rests on the shoulders of the property owner.

    99% does.

    Building not rated for occupancy
Unpermitted construction (with highly flammable materials)
No fire prevention/suppression equipment, or even smoke alarms
    Insufficient safety exits
Buildig surrounded by garbage and construction debris
Repeated warnings from city to cease occupancy

The only other blame you can levy is on the city for not being more forceful in enforcing code. He was told what the expectation was, and he ignored it. I'm sure the people who went there assumed the place was legitimate, which is unfortunate for everyone.

Do we need a "building code police" to arrest people for shit like this "for their protection" to prevent future recurrence? I don't like the sound of things like that, no matter how horrible the event that brings it up is.

He's a dick who lived in an unsafe firetrap that he then used to make money off of people who ended up dying from his lack of care.

Apparently the city had had issues in the past but never followed up.

Isn't not having codes enforced how this whole mess happened?

Definitely part of the conversation going on. A wake up call.
The event should not have taken place where it did. A friend that does these events for a living, in the same area, does it the right way. He obtains permits, visits by the fire Marshall, occupancy limits, insurance ..etc. More planning, less profit, less risk.

How about the other people who lived there and added to the mess that would become a death trap? It doesn't take a genius to realize that a stairway made of pallets isn't right or safe.
Believe me, I'm not trying to speak ill of the dead, or give him excuses. I fully believe that there should be negligent homicide or involuntary manslaughter charges among others against the owner. But Id bet he didnt do everything that made that shithole what it was by himself. And he didnt force others to come there and add to it.
