When the dealer gets to change my oil there are only 2 thing i will check after words that worry me from horror stories.
    1. Oil was filled.(I will check the dip stick before leaving the dealer)
    2. That the filter doesnt leak.(Might be hard to tell with the filter setup and skid plates but I always worry about the old seal not being removed) I will check my oil daily for a few days to endure the oil isn't leaking anywhere.

Besides that I'am not worried about the dealer doing my free oil changes. I will do additional oil changes as I see fit in between the standard maintenance for my own peace of mind.

I'm not sure what people are doing that makes changing the 3rd Gen oil so messy. You want messy? Try changing the oil in my '03 OR, six cylinder. That is the absolute worst placement of an oil filter ever. You need to be a contortionist to reach it, then oil runs everywhere. I manage to catch it for the most part but everything needs to be wiped down below the filter location afterwards. It's the pits.

I did my first 3rd Gen oil change a couple weeks ago, 6 months old and 3500 miles. I did it then so I would be good for the winter. I was ready for the worst and pleasantly surprised how smooth it went. As of now I don't put many miles on this truck so I plan to change the oil every 6-8 months regardless of mileage, depending on the weather.

I appreciate all the advice guys. Sorry for adding another oil thread, but now that I own a 2017 it's kind of all about me now, am I right?

It's messy because the oil is so thin. I remove the plug and oil splashed everywhere. It felt like all 6 qt wanted to come out all at once like water. I recommend changing the plug to aa Fumoto valve and attaching a hose to drain straight into some milk jugs or old oil containers.

My 2010 BMW is 15,000mi. That's with turbos. I sent Blackstone an oil sample at an early change and their analysis showed the oil had plenty of life left, so I've stayed at 15k.

Also note the interval is for normal usage; the maintenance document lists situations where you may want to consider a 5k interval

Yes. Some time ago I'd take my 4runner to the dealer close to the office during lunchtime. Cost me maybe $10 more but I didn't have to mess with cleanup or taking the used oil somewhere.

Of course, dealers vary so yours may be better or worse than others.

    Same as everybody else...
My son just bought a 2017 Tundra Off Road 4x4 , the suggested of according to the dealer is 5k miles and they only use synthetic

Edit...dealer says 5k but I pulled the maintenance guide and it reads every 10k or 12 months

That's interesting that they said that given that Toyota claims 10,000 oil change interval for the 2017 Tundra.
    http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms-s/T-MMS-17Tundra/pdf/T-MMS-17Tundra.pdf

Now that's "normal service" of course, and a 5k interval is specified when operating in "special conditions" as is true for the Tacoma and most others as well.

Edit: saw your edited post after posting the above. ;)

    What he said...^^^^^
Not A drop was spilled and not a drop on my hands due to the Fumoto valve... BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD"..
Hose right in to old container....same for the filter housing drain... Hardest thing is that friggin' skid plate...GRRR..

By the way...there is NO SUCH thing as a free oil change... The Toyota Care in Canada runs around $500.00, if I remember correctly... That gives me 2 oil changes/tire rotations/"sunshine" service at 5 and 15/towing or service calls/trip tic maps... All I would ever need is the oil changes and that price is way too much...I always decline that "service"...

In the US it is built into the vehicle price and isn't a line item add on.

We *can* buy a longer period of prepaid maintenance, and in the Southeast US the distributor likes to add that on via their ToyoGuard add on. I was able to avoid that with my truck fortunately.

LOL at triptiks, I don't know if any of the youngsters know what those were...

Yes, the famous ToyoGuard. I had a negotiated price for $35,800 OTD for my BEAUTIFUL Tacoma. Then I saw this great little line on the invoice. 'ToyoGuard - $699'

Ah hell no. I told my "trusted" salesman I wasn't paying for that and the OTD price just went to $35,100. They agreed. Quotas and all...

Long story short, ToyoGuard is irremovable from the MSRP package so I still have it.

You get an oil change! You get an oil change! We all get an oil change!

There are also plenty of horror stories of people screwing up their vehicle or themselves when doing their own maintenance. Someone not paying attention could easily drain the transmission fluid instead of the oil...

Generally though if I'm considering a dealer or independent shop I'll check Yelp and other ratings sites first, being sure to read the actual reviews.

Yep, like a crazy exgirlfriend, once it's there you're stuck with it. I think the only way I managed to avoid it was because I'd ordered my truck.

Technically, ToyoGuard gives you an *extra* two free oil changes if I remember correctly. So I get two, you get four.

Shit that filter location sucks. It was hit or miss getting the oil change monkey to change the filter before, when the filter was right on top. Now imagine how many oil filters don't get changed out. Better start using a paint pin on those skid plate bolts.

I would never consider marking my bolts because it really doesn't take much more effort to change my own oil. Really it's a 15-20 minute job. Most of that is waiting for the oil to drain.

Clearly its for the people who have others do the job for them. So obvious. . Shit, maybe you should paint your bolts to just in case.

It's time for my second appointment. My truck has 3800 miles. I'm wondering since it's the second time in will they change the oil . Because the first time they told me oh we don't change the oil now because it's synthetic and it last 10k! I said to myself what B.S.!My wife told me that in our old ford flex it said 10k oil change too. I look at her O.D. 7500 miles and threw a fit. she insisted that the owners guide said 10K. I took it that night to get a change shit was almost mud imho.So now 5k on my cars no matter what.
