As often as you see it places it doesn't belong, you'd be forgiven for thinking that it did, lol.

Here in Georgia, nothing is straight. As a result, everything gets caulk. Some beads are really thin, others span 1/4".

You can't really caulk stain grade trims

I've seen people try, though. They stain them first, then tape them and caulk the gap and paint the caulk to match the wall.

    Still ugly.

Get ready. Oz is about to teach us the proper way to nail the trim in relation to the wood grain.

When using DFir , the difference in hardness between the summer and winter wood that makes up the growth rings can be substantial , and with narrower gauge nails , can cause big problems with the nails following the grain as the path of least resistance .

I always try to orient my trim pieces so that the grain , if it is sloped , slopes away from the window or door opening and not into it . This lessens the chance of a nail blowing through the finished jamb .

For example , with this piece , I would want to use it on the left side so that if a nail followed the grain it would be towards the drywall and not towards the jamb .

If you look at your finish nails , they usually have a chisel end , similar to the bow of a ship . You can imagine that if the nail moves forward and encounters resistance , the bow shape will cause it to usually move in plane with the bow shape of the nail

( ie looking down on the row of nails from above , with the chisel shaped edges on the left and right , a nail encountering resistance is biased to move right or left , and not up or down )

Keeping this in mind , you can further limit nail blow out by aligning your nailer correctly when shooting on the trim .

In this orientaion , a nail biased to move left or right will remain in / under the trim / jamb

In this orientaion , a nail biased to move left or right is more likely to blow out of the side of your finished jamb

Not all nails are the same , my 18ga nails are biased left/right and the nails for my 15ga nailer are biased up/down so you gotta kind of pay attention

and with that I'm off my soapbox

Hickory is nicely figured for sure

The fine grain Fir is less dent prone and pretty common in this area for trims but its definitely a softwood and not a hardwood
