Replacing Timing Belt

Hello i bought my Tacoma 2 about two months ago it has 140,000 miles on it and i really don't know if the previous owner replaced the timing belt before or not. I am going to be doing a alot of travelling this year so just to be safe i would like to replace the Timing Belt.

My question is, what parts do i need? i took it to a shop and the guy with out even opening the hood told me i need the whole Kit, that includes the Pulleys and the Timing belt, is that right? or all i need is the Timing belt??

i would get the timing belt and water pump and any seals that are up there that may need replacing. i doubt you'll need to replace the pulleys. you'll also need one of these if you are doing it yourself.....

Don't need any special tools (that I can remember) to replace the water pump & thermostat. I'd also replace all 3 accessorty belts.

Yeah, I just did mine at 156,000 miles for the first time (bought it at 146,000). Pullys were fine and we did not use that tensioner tool. You can just remove the tensioner which involves unbolting the ac compressor (really not that bad). You will need the belt, thermostat, water pump, and the correct gasket material. Also pick up some red antifreeze.

 

Yeah, this is what pisses me off sometimes. I traded in an absolutely primo '96 Tacoma 4X4 for my new '09. I have ALL the service records for 140,000 miles on CD. Every time I turned a bolt, checked oil, changed oil, or did ANYTHING. I changed timing belts 15,000 - 20,000 miles EARLY and ran only Red Line synthetic oil in everything. Plugs were changed, etc. In short, everything was done to it that could be done to it.

The dealer would NOT take the records or pass any other maintenance info on the the new owner that bought it the NEXT day after I traded it in.... they cited "privacy" issues and said they were not allowed to. It's a shame, because that new owner won't have the benefit of all my meticulous records. Some dealer will try and rip him off by telling him he should do all that stuff just to be sure....

 

what gasket material did ya'll use?

 

I honestly cant remember. We just went to NAPA and used the stuff the guy suggested. It was black if that helps lol. 1000 miles later its not leaking.

 

aight. i gotcha. permatex makes some gasket material that will work. i gotta get some for mod day.

Asuming my car dosen't have an oil cooler would this be a good kit to buy? is this everything i need?

Should have sold it to a private owner. A) Would have sold fast with all your records and "papers" as I call them B) Would have made more money off it

dealer replaced my timing belt at 87k, engines sounds quieter, more power and noticed MPG 17 to 20
