Selling back and make a profit?

I used to be able to do this a while ago..but I was getting cars at auction and got some real nice deals well under a grand, so drive it 6-12 months and sell to break even or usually gain. And yes that includes sales tax, repairs, etc save fuel..

It's normally impossible to buy a vehicle and trade it in later and come close to break even. Tacoma's and 4Runners CAN be the exception. Their resale is nuts. People pay more for used Tacoma's than new one's all the time, but that price they paid includes the dealer markup the person that traded it in didn't get. I paid $2500 below invoice for a new 17 SR5 double cab, 4x4. That was an incredible price ($32K). I just traded it in, and after holding my ground, I got $32K for it. I spent $1700 on a 2.5 inch leveling kit, wheels, and tires. I figure I'm out about $2000 with license fees, and I thought that was a great deal. In Texas, you pay sales tax on the trade difference, so the two grand I spent on taxes when I bought the Tacoma was a wash, because my taxes were two grand less because I traded it in. Don't ever buy a late model vehicle, thinking you will be able to sell it or trade it without taking a huge bath. With Tacoma's and 4 runners, you will take less of a bath.

I traded the Tacoma in on a Canyon Diesel, and there is no way I will be able to replicate the Tacoma deal on this truck.

 

For a 17-18 yr old kid they were. That amount would buy you about 2 grand worth of car bought privately or from a used car dealer.

 

I traded it in for a 2017. Sticker on new truck was 36,350... I paid 7k OTD (ttl included).

 

I bought a used 08 Hummer H3 for $17,500. Traded it in a year and a half later and got $18,500 (was completely stock). The ONLY reason is because I bought it when gas prices were near $5/gallon and dealers were basically giving away trucks and SUVs. Gas prices went down and the market for bigger gas guzzling vehicles went back up.

Like others have said, you then have to figure in tax and registration fees depending on where you live.

 

When you guys say you traded in truck and got X.... how do you know you were actually given X in value for your truck?
If you also purchased another new truck, I would assume a dealer is the best expert in the world in playing shell games with numbers ala the old "four square" model...
Anyone here work in sales at a major car dealer?

 

I negotiate the price of the vehicle I am buying, and then negotiate the trade in. If you read the paper work it will list what each of those numbers are.

Unfortunately a lot of people end up in the situation you are talking about because they show up and say here is what I'm trading in and I want to keep payments on the new vehicle at $XXX per month.

 

I go in with all my homework done. Tell them I have $xxxx.xx and let them figure it out.

I've bought two 3rd gens at less than msrp sticker price and that includes TTL.

 

I may try this when I go buy a new highlander and trade in my Venza.
