I did the Blackstone Lab test on my oil the last change, I found the info pretty useful.

I use Blackstone Labs once a year, pretty cheap insurance to at least have some idea of what's going on inside the engine. I still change mine using Full Synthetic HM oil as close to the 5000 mileage recommendation as possible, sure the oil could go much further but I'm not sure about the OEM filter.

Some people using full synthetic change OIL at 10k or more, but change the FILTER at 5k intervals.
Personally, I use conventional oil and change oil/filter at 5k.

Unless you're going to the track with your Tacoma, I think a $70 oil change is excessive. Redline isn't providing you with any more protection than Mobil 1 in your Tacoma, but it's your money and if it gives you peace of mind, more power to you! The video is put out BY redline... of course they'll tell you their oil is the best. Many would argue Amsoil is better. For our application (daily use vehicle, not abused), and changing every 5k... pretty much any synthetic oil will do the trick.

This site used to have test data, but I'm not sure if it still does: https://bobistheoilguy.com/ It is very informative, and also explains what is done with your oil at the lab. In the 30 weight range (what we use) Mobil 1 was the best tested. $25 for 5 qts at Walmart.

Amsoil isn't actually better, as of the latest change, to Dexos. Secondly I do track my Tacoma, N/A and F/I. Protection=Protection

I used to take my wifeys Honda CRV to the Honda Stealership for oil change and I furnished the Mobil 1. I caught them two times putting non synthetic and keeping my Mobil 1. I raised hell about it and they said they were sorry and were just in the habit of pumping reg. oil in with the machine.

After that I change the oil in all my cars,..period. and Gen Tacos are so easy to change anyway. That way I KNOW what has been done and what has gone into my cars.

I'd never looked under the hood of a 4.0 2nd Gen before I got mine. First time I popped the hood and saw that filter front and center I laughed out loud. I used to always drop the skid plate on my T100 so I could snake my arm and filter wrench up there and have it drain down my arm into the armpit.

    Stupid stupid stupid easy.

My dad had his Tacoma before I did. first time I went to change his oil I slid under the vehicle to remove the oil plug and filter before opening the hood. I searched for quite a while not finding the filter. felt pretty stupid when I popped the hood.

Good for you. However, I didn't insult you with my post. There really wasn't a need for the knowledge>bliss comment, insinuating I am blissful in my ignorance. I was an engineer in the Navy for many years. I used to change oil in various turbines, blowers, pumps, etc... we also had an oil lab where we tested it. I wouldn't exactly say I'm ignorant. Anywho... have fun at the track.

I had a life time oil change on a Colorado I had back in the day $7.00 hazard fee was all I paid so I understand where you are coming from. Not that I am going to change your mind but sometimes cheaper can effect other things that cost more down the line like values and pistons. My 2 cents is I spend the extra on the synthetic (Amsoil Signature Series which is rated for 25k miles) it last a year or more based on my driving so the cost spread out is not to bad.

If you part with your 2nd gen 4.0! I intend to have mine until either we all go to warp drive or I'm dead or feeble.

Which could be any time now.

I've done the oil changes myself in all my vehicles for years and the 4.0L Tacoma is the easiest by far.

    M1 5W30 at 5K (~$25) and M1 5W30 w/ filter at 10K (~$32) intervals. 30 minutes start to finish.
