I'm going to work this from a different angle.

If I wanted a truck to beat the piss out of in the woods I would not buy a new Tacoma at all - I'd buy a fully modded, terrible daily driver that can climb trees complete with scratches and dents in everything already.

If I was mostly driving on improved roads/two track to get to a camping spot and daily driving my truck in the real world (which I am) and wanted some comfort features of the Limited and a lift without voiding the warranty of half the driveline then I would get the Pro. Otherwise I'd just get the OR (which I did).

I didn't find anything on the Pro to be worth the price of admission (IMO, for me) but, that's mostly because I'm fine without the upgrades and when I get to the end of the places my truck can go (or I'm willing to go I should say) - I unload an enduro bike and rip that shit like no truck ever will :).

I've gone back and forth on this for a while. Still haven't pulled the trigger. If the pro was available with moonroof and JBL ... no contest. Turning an offroad into a fauxpro would be a fun project, but at the end of the day, I'd be spending approx the same money. At resale time, the Pro will fetch Pro money and the fauxpro will fetch OR money. Mod money never pans out unfortunately. Still, I'm tempted because I could have a black or silver "pro" with moonroof and JBL.

I go off roading on plenty of trails here in Alaska and have not needed to upgrade tires or suspension. I will however upgrade for a nicer ride. Tires will wait till worn.

merely the point i was trying to make. but it got lost in the hype between lifts and pro talk. to each their own, but a decade of car sales taught me people buy vehicles for the exception which i find insane. and theres very very few places you cxan go in a stock pro you couldnt get in a stock OR

Very very few, as in none... the pro doesn't have any functional advantages over a off-road when wheeling.

be honest with yourself. If you go all out wheeling, you can build an off-road Tacoma better than the PRO. But will you really go wheeling to THAT extreme? doubt it, but I dont know your plans. in 10 years, that pro will be worth more. But that is an entirely different point.

Well... maybe there is like a ... a... you know, a restricted access "Pro" lounge somewhere that you can only get to with one? You know, with flat brim hat racks, free Monster Energy drinks and Calvin peeing on a Raptor stickers, nitrogen tire pumps and the like?

Thanks for all the feedback. very helpful indeed. let's see.... to clarify a bit, Imy looking for a truck that I can drive daily and on days off tackle a trail either with myself or a group. Looking to be able to have a rtt, fridge spare tire, bumper with swing out etc... on the back. Looking for a suspension that can handle this. I'm not even sure the pro can because there are no vids out except with an empty truck. I don't have a desire to take it to an extreme crawling level, for that maybe I'll pickup/build a diff rig down the line. I was more or less looking to get away from society, logging roads. rough back roads etc... if it looks like it's dangerous to go down then it probably is and I wouldnt take any new vehicle until I've earned my first few battle scars or what have you. but it seems to me for the additional 4k for the pro that's pretty much what it would cost to do on my own. am I wrong?

well again, you dont need a lift to explore. the inch difference in the front clearance isnt much. based on what you are looking to carry, i think you'd be better off buying an OR, playing around and seeing what it can and cannot do. down the road when you get crazy with bumpers and armor your truck will be heavier and may need suspension upgrade. thats where custom really helps because you are correct, the pro is setup for a specific weight+/- a few lbs. if you find you always bring X amount of gear with you, you can setup your suspension for it since there are roughly a gazillion shock/spring combos. i just dont see anything in the pro thats going to help you out in the short term or down the road.

EDIT: checked and the pro and OR have the same ground clearance. i know the pro is a bit higher in front but they both list 9.4" ground clearance because the rear diff is the low point which wont get higher with any lift.

I would go with the PRO for sure. In 10 years it will be worth a ton more. You dont have big plans that exceed what the pro comes with.

My SR5 had the same ground clearance until I changed my tires. Now it's 10.1" to the bottom of the rear diff.

OP I went with a more base approach to this because I do take it off-road and will upgrade the suspension. Plus it's what I could afford comfortably money wise. And I didn't really care for the extras in price difference as I really wouldn't need crawl control. Locking diff would be great but haven't found myself in a situation to use it. So go with the lesser if you plan on changing things around. Especially if you're adding weight. Spend the extra on suspension to keep up with your mods and you'll still end up better than pro and for about the same money but you have upgrades.

The OffRoad and Limited didn't have all I wanted. The Pro did. I could have very well got the OffRoad or Limited and modded it to what I want, but I know I don't have the time to do it, so I bought the already completed Pro and am a happy camper.

    This.

I bought a 16' limited and traded it in on a Pro. The Pro already has Fox suspension, sits 1 inch higher and has a front skid. Everything else is mainly looks. The Pro can do everything a OR can, maybe more.

Why wouldn't a Pro be able to do haul this stuff? Have you done any research on the Pro or OR or did you just come here and ask a question without doing your own homework?

If you want to build a truck buy a OR. If you don't want to build it, buy a Pro.

I deleted the other part of the quote about not taking it OR until it got some scars but my response to the statement is- Mine was on trails with 1500 mile on it. Don't be scared of it.
