I haven't really looked to see how my pelfreybilt is bilt (sic) but mine saved my truck.

The hoop did bend in a bit. We pulled it back out with @Night Eagle 's truck.

unless you go clear through and weld onto an opposite side of that part of the bumper a surface weld and through weld, as long as its sound, will be just as good as poking a hole into the bumper and welding it on the interior.

IMG_0233.jpg The .120 wall dom tube bent over above the weld. Not the 3/16 plate and not a single weld sheared or cracked.

Look at an ARB design and the back side of the bumper. They haven't been in business for nearly 30+ years for nothing.

I do like your hoop design as it doesn't restrict the headlight at all. But at the same time you smash into a deer on the highway it's gonna stuff itself into that hoop openING and destroy your headlight anyways. That's why designs like ARB keep the hoop out in front of the headlight and grill area.

I am NOT saying that a surface weld is weak ass shit, I am saying you could build it even stronger if you wanted and some manufacturers suck at suface welds. That is not directed at you.

i know but personally i dont think that a hitting a deer will effect TO much one bumper from another, there is 1,000,000 diffrent possibilitys that could happen and i think if the deer is a good shot its going into your light, grill or even worse up and into your lap. i would rather know that a bumper will crumble slightly under a larger colision then stay stiff as shit because we did remove our crash bars to be able to mount these bumpers. not trying to argue.

but are you planning on hitting deer soono_O maybe we should limit you to your little scooter...

or do you like old caddys

Yeah but if you would of had a hoop over the head light it would of tore off. But fuck it. If you hit anything your going to have to rebuild anyways. Not much you can do about it. So stop hitting shit :p

 i think it would have been just fine if there was a 3rd hoop set. what are you thinking will brake? the tube, weld, or bumper?

ARB bumpers are designed around hitting Kangaroos in the outback and from what I am told it's a fairly standard occurance. Also ARB has a sub-frame mounting bracket designed for impact. That part "crumbles" to absorb the impact and not the bumper itself.

Variables are just that variables. Anything can happen. I am just pointing out the fact that there are optiona to build an even stronger hooped bump should someone want to.

Hell my bumper will not protect shit but I don't plan on hitting deer anyways this is why I have some many lights. :D

You never know really. It all depends on a lot of things. How hard you hit something and what angle you hit it. What steel your using and the kind of weld it is. That's why I'm like fuck it. I'll deal with the problem when it happens. Don't get to defensive. The point was if you run the tube through the plate and welded inside and out side it just made it stronger then welding to the top of the plate. That's all. Now does it have to be that way. No. it was just an idea.

Shit if I get hit in the rear. I'm so screwed. Gramps pointed it out to me. I took a step back and looked at it. Gramps does have a good eye from looking from outside of the box.

I'm pretty impressed with what you have accomplished. Keep going and be open.

A36 steel is A36 steel with a yield strength of 36ksi (this is the ductile region of the steel) and a ultimate of 80ksi... punching 0.120 steel through 3/16 offers no structural benefits. Now, if you're welding 1/2" plate to 1/2" plate - yeah, using a beveled fillet weld, or rosette weld would be necessary in order to develop the full strength of the steel with the weld. when working with 3/16 and the .120 tube, your welds are going to be the strongest part of the member. If stressed, the A36 steel will rupture before the weld will fail.
